David A Smith - Sign Artist
David A Smith is a name that has become synonymous in Sign-Writing and Glass gilding circles, with high quality, hand crafted reverse glass signs and decorative silvered and gilded mirrors.
In this short documentary, we reveal behind the scenes work, techniques and visions that Dave uses when carrying out his passion as a glass embosser - One of the few remaining traditional UK glass artists.

Great job!
So as the final (For upload to Vimeo HD) what is your settings? H.264?
It was actually a 1080p movie but looked too compressed in full hd 8500kbps, any higher and I would exceed the 1gb upload limit.
Also... 14 Minutes?! WOW!!!
Simply stunning!
Why don't I hear much about you from others online?
You need more promoting or social networking!
I've been trying to get a film on the Vimeo HD channel or Staff picks for quite a while.. If I eventually get on there that might make me a bit more known.
What do you edit with? FCS/FCP?
I'm still learning way too much to be able to do any serious work without stumbling upon something new to try out and in doing so losing focus (non-intended pun).
After watching it in its entirety I realized how much better it was than the initial preview I had since I didn't have time to watch it all.
Personally I'm a contemporary/modern design kind of person but this is a dying art and this video made me realize how I fully respect people like David A Smith. We need more people like him in this world.
David does do contemporary/modern pieces too but he did tell me that they are much quicker for him to produce than the more traditional style that we see in this video.
I meant modern things in general as in I dislike anything antique in my house... Hahaha
However I respect him to the fullest and would probably take up an Art like his if I find a dying Art.
Do you use any plugins?
It's extremely hard to do any form of grading or colour correction on my setup as I have a MBP with a glossy screen and an external monitor with a matt finish. The video looks completely different on both even though i've setup the colour on both.
The pictures are superb. The changes of perspectives and views are very interesting to me. For example around 3:50 there are pieces of glass highlighted in a very special way.
The spoken word is done by the artist, who is being introduced, himself. I like that.
Craftsmanship has always interested me, especially when it was connected with the arts.
Bravo!
congratulation to the team!
love that london pride beer too !
good job !
Excellent work!
Thought the ending credits, using the glass like that, was icing on the cake. It's great to see you use what was available and achieve such a lovely short doc.
Sound was nice and clean as well, did you got the way of Zoom recorder on top of the camera for the most part?
Or did you take a different approach?
Well good work and hope to see more.
I think what really excited me was having my love for old world handmade art being so lovingly explained within my fascination with all things digital and modern.
I kept being pulled by the two processes; the sign painting, and the film making. Then by the thought that the film is a sign, itself.
This is one of those times that the "like" button seems so completely inadequate. I loved this, really. Thanks.
I enjoyed every second of it.
Great portrait.
Very good!
....he has sort of a Philip Bloom vibe going on.
Thanks for sharing this Danny!
beautiful film !
