David A Smith is a name that has become synonymous in Sign-Writing and Glass gilding circles, with high quality, hand crafted reverse glass signs and decorative silvered and gilded mirrors.

In this short documentary, we reveal behind the scenes work, techniques and visions that Dave uses when carrying out his passion as a glass embosser - One of the few remaining traditional UK glass artists.

A lovely and beautifully shot documentary about signmaking - a job I still do today around my filmmaking. I know Dave Smith and his work. A very talented man indeed.

    Great job!

A Beautiful film! Well done, it kept me hooked all the way through!
  •
  • Hay Danny, Great pictures. awasome quality. Pretty cool colors. i love them all. Good job again. Thanx for sharing.

So as the final (For upload to Vimeo HD) what is your settings? H.264?
  • Danny Cooke plus 1 year ago
Thanks :) I spent a fair bit of hours of trial and error and finally settled with rendering it in H.264 with a bit rate of around 8500kbps 720p for the video.

It was actually a 1080p movie but looked too compressed in full hd 8500kbps, any higher and I would exceed the 1gb upload limit.
  • Ah it is . .:) thanx again Danny. Do more works. i'm waiting . .:)

    What do you shoot with?

    Also... 14 Minutes?! WOW!!!

    Simply stunning!
Why don't I hear much about you from others online?
You need more promoting or social networking!
  • Danny Cooke plus 1 year ago
Thanks Philip, it was shot on a Canon 7D using mostly Sigma 30mm f1.4 and Canon 50mm f1.8.

I've been trying to get a film on the Vimeo HD channel or Staff picks for quite a while.. If I eventually get on there that might make me a bit more known.
  • Philip Han 1 year ago
    That's awesome! I have a 7D and a 30mm f/1.4 too!
What do you edit with? FCS/FCP?

I'm still learning way too much to be able to do any serious work without stumbling upon something new to try out and in doing so losing focus (non-intended pun).

After watching it in its entirety I realized how much better it was than the initial preview I had since I didn't have time to watch it all.

Personally I'm a contemporary/modern design kind of person but this is a dying art and this video made me realize how I fully respect people like David A Smith. We need more people like him in this world.
  • Danny Cooke plus 1 year ago
Thanks again Philip, I do use Final Cut Pro. I've only be using it for a little over year now and it was a big transition from using Sony Vegas which was certainly a much quicker and easier to use system.

David does do contemporary/modern pieces too but he did tell me that they are much quicker for him to produce than the more traditional style that we see in this video.
  • Philip Han 1 year ago
    Oh, no no no!
I meant modern things in general as in I dislike anything antique in my house... Hahaha

However I respect him to the fullest and would probably take up an Art like his if I find a dying Art.

    Do you use any plugins?
  • Danny Cooke plus 1 year ago
Thats what I thought :-) I used no plugins on this, just added the broadcast safe filter and 3 way colour corrector and added a tiny tiny bit of saturation.

It's extremely hard to do any form of grading or colour correction on my setup as I have a MBP with a glossy screen and an external monitor with a matt finish. The video looks completely different on both even though i've setup the colour on both.

  •
  • What a joy to watch...gorgeous! You showcased his amazing work in the most elegant way. I loved the changes in pace - the floating gold leaf...wow. Perfect focus, movement, composition...excellent description of his process. I'm so impressed...just magic.
  •
  • Erich Nestler plus 1 year ago
The soundtrack is highly interesting. As it changes with the different episodes and scenes of the film it underlines, highlights, comments, enhances, yes: even creates small incidents of supense: What is coming next?

The pictures are superb. The changes of perspectives and views are very interesting to me. For example around 3:50 there are pieces of glass highlighted in a very special way.

The spoken word is done by the artist, who is being introduced, himself. I like that.

Craftsmanship has always interested me, especially when it was connected with the arts.
  •
  • Really nicely shot documentary of a true artist at work... Amazing.

This is great, Danny! A beautiful, interesting subject expertly told. David's work is amazing, and you highlight it, his processes and his passion for the work so well. There's so much to like here—namely ALL OF IT. Love the shot of the gold leaf falling at 3:23 — and what a fantastic execution of the end credits. Really, really superb. Excellent work!

    I loved this piece.
Thought the ending credits, using the glass like that, was icing on the cake. It's great to see you use what was available and achieve such a lovely short doc.

Sound was nice and clean as well, did you got the way of Zoom recorder on top of the camera for the most part?
Or did you take a different approach?
  • Danny Cooke plus 1 year ago
Thanks Joseph, the talking was captured with a zoom h4n. The rest was Canon 7D built in mic. From the get go I reckoned that the music track would hide the flaws of the 7D mic as the gain on that was turned down.
  • Joseph Bearese 1 year ago

This is as close to perfect as a film can be. Can't wait to watch it again. A visual feast, and very thought provoking on a lot of levels.

I think what really excited me was having my love for old world handmade art being so lovingly explained within my fascination with all things digital and modern.

I kept being pulled by the two processes; the sign painting, and the film making. Then by the thought that the film is a sign, itself.

This is one of those times that the "like" button seems so completely inadequate. I loved this, really. Thanks.
