Manfred is an animated short that I made for my graduation project for my Bachelor of Art & Technology, as part of my 3D computer animation and visual effects studies at the Utrecht school of the Arts. Manfred is the eponymous character in a concept for an animation series of the same name. Each episode features Manfred experiencing an everyday frustration and how he deals with it.

With this film I not only wanted to make a humorous character-based animation but also tried to showcase my knowledge of Maya (modeling, texturing, rigging, lighting, rendering), compositing in nuke, and my ability as a designer to bridge the gap between 2D and 3D animation design. I hope you’ll enjoy the animation.

At the moment I’m available for freelance work and always on the lookout for interesting jobs.

Manfred is selected for the 2010 Children’s film festival ‘Cinekid’ in the category ‘Nederlands kort’, October 20-29.

thats fresh! I love the characters. in germany we have a guy called BERND DAS BROT (BERND THE BREAD), he could be a distant relative of Manfred ... check him out, you might like him: youtube.com/watch?v=mBYvbcwfL20

This is fabulous....and you did all the animation and texturing in Maya?!? The characters look handmade in places - and I mean that as a sincere compliment to your style. it's a fantastic look. Brilliant!
  • Arjen Klaverstijn plus 1 year ago
Hello and thanks for the compliment! I drew the outlines and shading on paper and colored those drawings in photoshop. Then I tweaked the pencil drawings to be used as a bump map. This gives an immediate organic feel to the characters, something that me longer to achieve in digital form. You get the paper texture, dirt, grains, blotches and smudges etc. as a bonus.

you can find the texture examples here:

Nice job! Storytelling is good, the animation, lighting and modelling are all excellent, as is the score but I'm not sure about the character design. It seems odd that the human characters are blocky and square when the other, background elements are stylised in a different, simplified cartoony way. Feels like two design styles o r two different worlds coexisting in the same space. It would be interesting to see the blocky style carried across and applied to all the elements in the film. That aside, nice work!

Just not sure about the end. I was expecting some weird twist, but please, don't take this comment as something harmful or too hard. The short is really great ! Really looking forward to seeing in the world's best festivals.
