...feeling blue ;-)

First time I've used Lightroom from the CS3 suite to grade individual frames. This now adds another dimension to tone and texture - not all of it good though, but it is after all just another test playing around with lighting ;-)

See if you can spot the gaff when Erik (the dog) almost sent the camera & tripod to the ground?

Kind of a low ceiling effect between 00:27 and ~00:50 - felt as if I needed to duck my head down a bit to avoid being scalped from behind by some very powerful fast moving clouds. A creative and skillfully compiled time-lapse vid bud: really portrayed the raw power of nature beautifully with the use of those steely grey textures.

    Erik at 01:35?

Erik is in the photo on the bottom right :)

Nice work! The color effects are nice. Eric seems like a good first mate when you are out there shooting... i have my own co-pilot in my dog Baxter! Looks like you have some dust on your sensor near top right corner (rghhhhh - i hate that) i batch edit in LightRoom could help with the existing pictures - god knows i have to do that half the time. My new camera has a self cleaning sensor so hopefully no more, but we shall see.
  • ße ωell ;-) plus 1 year ago
thanks Chad, I've only just figured out Lightroom and its good for getting rid of those annoying spots! The spots in question were on the polorising filter and it looks like water marks - phfff!!! I need a better lens cleaning solution me thinks ;-)

Your co-pilot sounds like a good friend, mine is still too young to understand the importance of stay away from the gear :D

Looking forward to seeing what you do with the D700 :)

Very good solution is the (Google) HAMA LENSPEN ! Always use that one!

    Great work Be

Loving the processing. The slight vignette makes it look like it was shot through a Letus adapter.

And the churchyard looks different again with the processing, even though it's previously used footage.

I wouldn't have called it a test - perhaps just rename it to "Feeling Blue". I'd pass it as a completed work!

You did this with lightroom from stillphotos? There's an easy function to animate frame by frame? I thought it was just a program for managing large amounts of photographs... Cool... Looks great...
  • ße ωell ;-) plus 1 year ago
not strictly true Daniel, instead of using After Effects or Premiere to colour grade I used Lightroom instead. I still used Premiere to create the Time Lapse, but it was a simple matter of importing and then compiling to video once the soundtrack was in place.

    Glad you liked it :)

What did you use to pan the camera? Also, I've never used Lightroom( don't know much about it), but I don't imagine you mean you graded thousands of frames individually - presumably there is a function in Lightroom that allows you to grade multiple photos with the same settings at the same time?
  • ße ωell ;-) plus 1 year ago
modified telescope head provides the panning.

Lightroom - well this effort is my very first attempt with the software, never used it before this. I imported the image folder into Lr and selected the 1st image in the sequence, made the adjustments and then clicked on the 'Sync Settings' button then waited a while ;-)

it's as easy as that really...

    Brian, who is Brian ???

technical side is that it was all done with a Nikon D80, and all the other things mentioned in the comments above...

    thanks :)

Be well the other comments are right. You shouldn't name this as a time lapse project. It is harmony between nature and mankinds artifacts. I wish you would get closer to cementery stones.
    `It is Harmony in Blue`
    In my perspective
  • ße ωell ;-) plus 1 year ago
    thanks Kamil :)

but this is 'just a test' you see, as this was the first time I used this particular piece of software to colour grade. When I become proficient or competent with an application then I will give the final output a name/title. For now, this remains as a test because I know I can do better - but we will see ;-)

    Another cool way with lightroom:
    -Capture your pictures as RAW
-Import to lightroom and select all
-Make 'virtual copy' (now only the vc are selected)
    - raise lighning up (+2)
    -make virtual copy again
    - set down lightning -4
--> Now you have each of your pictures in 3 different lightning typs.
    -->Batchprocessing
    - Put this into 'photomatix', use batchtool and you will get fakeHDR pictures. These can be combined to a timelapse as usual.
  • ße ωell ;-) plus 1 year ago
    thanks Adamus,

I'm very familiar with the technique and usually it is the following:
    Normal Exposure / +2 Exposure / -2 Exposure

-4 Exposure (probably be too harsh)

Anyhow, I've already posted links to the above tips in this channel vimeo.com/timelapseinHD

I prefer real HDR though seeing as my camera supports bracket mode ;-)

This is ridiculous! How long did it take to make it? total time, with color grading and everything.
  • ße ωell ;-) plus 1 year ago
the scenes are taken over a number of days, with a typical 1 minute scene representing up to two hours of actual time. Colour grading (once I decide what I want) usually takes between 1 and 2 hours for a complete render of the whole composition - uploading and waiting for vimeo can sometimes seem like an eternity ;-)

overall, this probably took a little over 8 hours back-to-back...
  • Winfried Neessen plus 10 months ago
So do I get it correctly? You are taking one photo per minute over a 120 minute timeframe and then put them in a row to get this great piece of footage?
  • ße ωell ;-) plus 10 months ago
    hi Winfried,

...no, what I meant to say was that a typical one minute scene you view could represent up to two hours of actual time. I take photographs varying in duration from 3 seconds per shot up to a maximum of ten seconds per shot and then string them together in a video of 24 frames (photos) per second. With night scenes - this duration is even longer...

Thanks for watching, and I'm pleased you like it.

    be well ;-)

In the first segment, how long did it take for your panning to complete ?? I'm going to buy a MiLapse, and I'm trying to figure out a calculation that works with interval time and panning motion.
  • ße ωell ;-) plus 1 year ago
the first panning scene was edited out of some footage spanning about an hour or so. What you see in that scene was probably around 25 - 30 minutes worth, maybe a little more...

Loved this, really nice TL. Great colour grading (grey/blue is so nice) and the motorized pans were wonderful. Churches are such great subject matter for photographing, and these are great examples. Perfect music, too (I'd forgotten all about Magnatune, thanks for the reminder).

How many frames? and how long did this take in lightroom? I thought of doing this but it seemed like it would take forever to batch 1,000+ photos
  • ße ωell ;-) plus 1 year ago
it took a while Victor, can't remember the exact details but I think it was around 6 hours to render each photo once I had decided what I liked.

    Thanks for watching :)

Wow, that was great work! Love the panning shots a lot and the exposures were great. Really fantastic shots indeed! Lightroom is a cool program - must have taken forever to retouch so many frames, but I know how that feels - have you ever tried Magic Bullet for video? I would work great for this sort of retouching. Once again, fantastic work!
  • ße ωell ;-) plus 1 year ago
    thanks :)

I never really used Lightroom for batch work before I made this - this was my first real attempt at using this program. It did take a while though, and in all fairness it would have probably taken just as long with Magic Bullet although I wouldn't have got the same effect as I did with LR.

Thanks for the kind comment :)

Thanks for the comments appreciate it, like what you have done here will go investigate lightroom straight away. What
camera do you use. Have a look at the time machine thats the motion head I use
  • ße ωell ;-) plus 1 year ago
thanks Scott, this was shot using a Nikon D80 mostly as jpegs but some scenes where NEF (raw) files :)
  • Tim 10 months ago
wait so some of the video is in NEF raw? Did you use Premiere to make your video with RAW files? I did not know this is possible
  • ße ωell ;-) plus 10 months ago
nikon provide a plug-in that allows other applications to read - NEF - raw files, but it is memory hungry. This allows Premiere, After Effects, Light Room and Photoshop to use them.

These are the apps I use ;-)
