I am a photoengraver by trade (it no longer exists as a trade) and while I was doing my apprenticeship I used to walk pass the blokes on the linotype machines to get to my section .... so that brought back so many memories thank you.....

As an old print journo, I love this. The sound of the lino even dragged up from my memory the caseroom smell of hot metal and oily waste.

In 1965 I walked into my high school print shop class and saw this amazing machine . . . and said I NEED to learn how to operate it. Thus began my 45-year career in the printing industry! What memories your video teaser is bringing back! Can't wait to see the finished product. Let me know if I can give you any input as I ran these machines for a lot of years!

My Dad was a Linotype Operator at the Providence Journal and the Pawtucket Times. I remember he got laid off 2 years before his retirement as the computer world emerged. Thanks for spotlighting a bygone noble craft. I still have Linotype letters he sent me on newsprint when I was hospitalized as a child.

One of the single most complex machines ever designed--and they worked! I used to marvel at the genius of this machine whenever I visited the composing room. Beautiful trailer--good luck with the film!

looks good, but that music drop was way too harsh.
  • Ivan Faerman plus 10 months ago
Agree. And some of the interviews are panned to the sides, with what sounds like cam audio on the other.. they sure sound weird..

    Still, the doc looks awesome...

en Chile, hay una imprenta donde aun se utiliza la Linotipia. Nosotros hicimos un trabajo y en ese lugar nos mostraron las maquinas, como funcionan e iban llegando los clientes en busca de su encargo.

Hopping on Kickstarter to donate now... looks amazing.

Plus, I work in a print/banner/etc shop which has an old Linotype in storage. Not up and running but could be.

My boss used to work on it when he first started in the business 56 years ago. He's 77.
  • Linotype: The Film plus 8 months ago
Unfortunately, you cannot donate any longer to the Kickstarter project. You can still support the film by contacting the director (connect page at linotypefilm.com) or purchasing merchandise.
  • Lee Swagerty 8 months ago
Yeah, I realized that just after posting that comment. Why I didn't check first, who knows.

When will the film be available for purchase (DVD or digital)?
  • Linotype: The Film plus 7 months ago
The film is slated to finished by late 2011 and DVDs will be available for purchase in early 2012.

Heartwarming to see people revisiting these incredible machines. On our agency's 'all must see' list for sure.
I had to learn to use a Linotype (and Ludlow and Monotype...all beasts) when at graphic arts college in the '70s. This was during the period when phototypesetting was rapidly taking over, so it was kind of like learning to drive steam engines. One of my instructors could actually get the Linotype to play 'God Save the Queen' as he typed. Can't say I missed the molten lead squirting at my crotch from an overtight line though. I doubt if anything 'hot metal' would be legal in the average workplace today. "Hey workers...I want you to handle warm chunks of lead, tin and antimony alloy all day while breathing in the fumes off a red-hot crucible." Aaah! Those were the days.

Wish you great success with the film.
