I've decided to create little features between episodes of Tradition Heard called "extras." These will take you further into the culture of the region I'm exploring, beyond the music alone.
In this "extra" I'm with Orquesta Astillero bandoneon player Mariano González, learning the steps for preparing mate, a regional tea.
I went to Mariano's apartment specifically to learn about the bandoneón, a segment which we'll see later on, but we also went into his kitchen to see how he prepared yerba mate, step-by-step. Please enjoy, and do try to procure some mate of your own.
