i really enjoyed watching the reactions of all the people to the camera. such an interesting lens into people. yet she takes it all in stride.

this is a lot like our Lip Dub project - vimeo.com/lipdub

Yeah, it is surprising what can happen within a mob of people... all in all, people where quite nice...ish.

I once pointed a camera out the back window of a car to get a good shot of the city street for a project i was doing, and a van full of guys saw me and when we stopped at a red light they yelled "why the FUCK you filming us" we tried to tell them that we weren't but they were obviously looking to start something so they followed us around for about 45 minutes, we eventually lost them. but it made me realize that some people just get pissed off at the sight of a camera, and i hope that someday i have the balls to go into a situation like this. Bravo!
  • David Vandas 1 year ago
You know, I've run into similar situations like you have (ChriZZZ Emerson). For this video though, I don't think I was thinking of how it would effect us in a bad way, if anything, I assumed things would get out of control and wanted to make sure to capture it. I don't know how smart that is... but my main concern was nobody harming Anna or the Camera gear and my camera guy. Anna and my tight crew were really excited with the concept and so we went out and shot it. I get so pumped with adrenaline when I do a shoot like this, that I would probably get physical if needed...I don't know how smart that is either... since I'm not very big... I don't think I'm giving good advice... somehow we just thought it would be cool, so we did it. I also think it helps having someone beautiful like Anna in the spot light, there's nothing threating about her, just kind of a peaceful presence.

I loooooooved this very very much! Wonderful idea. Some of those people where just plain embarrassing though ;)
  • David Vandas 1 year ago
Thanks for your compliments. Some of those embarrassing people remind me of myself sometimes. . umm.. .. but hopefully one day we'll all grow up and get younger at heart :)

Beautiful girl, beautiful song, I was there, for a moment......
  • David Vandas 1 year ago
Wow. that's a great compliment! thanks. As an aspiring film-maker, I'm constantly trying to learn how to evoke emotion or a feeling. I'm glad you were there... I'm sure Anna's song and presence helped :)

    wow...

where was this filmed? what exactly is going on in the background.
  • David Vandas 1 year ago
It was filmed in Vancouver, Canada. Vancouver has these huge international firework competitions every summer. As the crowd started to pile out, we started to record...

I'm still wondering why he showed his stomach to the camera. ;–)
  • David Vandas 1 year ago
After we filmed this, I discovered this guy is a life long friend of one of my friends. And then I discovered more of my friends know him. They all said they laughed when they saw him embarrassing himself on this video. i still don't know his thoughts... oh well, I think he's probably laughing too...

  • antomic 1 year ago
how did you get all those people to sign release forms?? hwyah hwyah!
  • B Unis plus 1 year ago
Strictly speaking, releases aren't necessary in public spaces -- which a street or sidewalk clearly is. And pursuing the camera, when it has a minispot and is clearly running, pretty much constitutes a release even for what *might* in a seriously expensive lawyer's hands be argued to constitute a defamatory image.
  • antomic 1 year ago
thank you for clearly explaining. next time i will use a winkie face so you know i was clearly joking.

it's apparent the police had no issues either, as by the looks of the event they had their hands full with crowd control.

as for anna and david, nice job, fun idea, keep up the good work.
  • David Vandas 1 year ago
thanks for the info Saroyan Stransky. Thanks for asking the question Antomic. I'm about to send the video to some broadcasters so this is a topic I need to address.

Yeah, the police were more concerned with holding the peace in the streets.

    thanks for the compliments.

Absolutely mesmerizing to watch. A surreal circus of the absurd. I love how she almost floats through it above it all as if it was almost shot separately. Couldn't take my eyes off her. A star in the making.

    Where was it filmed?
  • David Vandas 1 year ago
Hey matcluck, thanks for the great comment. This was filmed in Vancouver, Canada.

very nice work there, were you walking backwards most of the time ?
  • David Vandas 1 year ago
the camera man had a steady cam rig and so he was kinda walking forward with the camera shooting backwards... i think...it's a bit of a blur...
  •
  • eladbari 1 year ago
u know...im such a perfectionist, i would be pissed off if people would do that to me while filming. for me, i wouldnt want anyone to wave to the camera and all, as it ruins the shot. But, this, clearly, gives me a different point of view..whereas its o.k to just 'go with the flow' and shoot. This whole diversity between your 'super chill' talent, and the crowd is amazing!! :]

i think, in a way..this video shows a little of the kinda shallow america. all those guys, showing off their muscles to hit on her..etc. pretty funny :]

Loved the song, loved the video, very intriguing indeed. Makes me wonder where this was shot, so that I can avoid the place.

Love to see more of you both!
  • David Vandas 1 year ago
thanks David. It was shot in my favorite place in the world. Vancouver, Canada. Yeah... but Vancouver does have it's characters too though...

I just posted another video with Anna if you want to see it.

    vimeo.com/1534435

    thanks.
  • David Silverline 1 year ago
Vancouver? I heard many good stories about it. And yes, I suppose if you go wandering about with a camera in Amsterdam you'd get the same kind of weird reactions.

I'm just wondering if there's something written on the camera man's face or shirt, or something that caused all those people to react that way. :P
  • David Vandas 1 year ago
Nope... except for a small spot light on top of the camera. But the camera was also on top of a steadycam rig, so I'm sure that drew some attention.

Nice song, beautifully sung, but to be honest the video made me feel uneasy, i kept expecting some idiot to overstep the mark. Nice idea though.
  • David Vandas 1 year ago
thanks for the feedback Steve. That was kinda the contrast we were going for. The song is actually about her thoughts of God being with her in the worst of times and the unnatural peace God can bring amidst chaos.

I really enjoyed this video. The girl is calm and beautiful with a beautiful voice. The production is very well shot with a good sense of being there as well as no annoying camera movement.

I hope to see more videos like this.

This is a perfect example of making good use of a real-life situation and incorporating it into your films / video because they cost nothing and offers all kinds of visual possibilities. I had an idea of shooting a short film around a smashed-up car left on the road near my old house but sadly it got taken away before I started on it.

Really enjoyed this video - Nice one David

    Wonderful art. Thank you!
The stress of people messing with the camera and the lyrics are a wonderful match... she seems to make it work because "your'e here". Very nicely done.
