This is time and money spend supporting one particular device (who's app distribution relies on approval from a 3rd party) that is a small percentage of the market. Granted most devs going to this will probably have iPhones but it seems terribly silly.
1. Limit the economic impact for users (data roaming is expensive)
2. Performance
3. Try something we hadn't done before
4. Easter eggs.
5. Have fun doing it.
Sure, we could have attempted to tackle these things in HTML 5, but to be honest, we do this for the love of the conference, and if we aren't having fun doing it, there really isn't a point to it.
