Nice app. Was it made using the Flash CS5 Packager? Slightly ironic if it wasn't...
  • Paulo Fierro plus 1 year ago
thanks paul! not using packager no. we weren't really going for irony - more focused on a smooth app :)

Why not just create a mobile version of the site that all mobile phones can access?

This is time and money spend supporting one particular device (who's app distribution relies on approval from a 3rd party) that is a small percentage of the market. Granted most devs going to this will probably have iPhones but it seems terribly silly.

its a fair point and one that we did consider. however, we felt like we set the bar pretty high with last year's app (vimeo.com/6284395) and wanted to try to match if not surpass it. as it stands I just don't feel like we could have done that with say HTML5 and therefore the choice was made to go native. in a year or two, who knows :)

We had a few core design criteria when we did this last year, and since carried over to this year as well:

    1. Limit the economic impact for users (data roaming is expensive)
    2. Performance
    3. Try something we hadn't done before
    4. Easter eggs.
    5. Have fun doing it.

Sure, we could have attempted to tackle these things in HTML 5, but to be honest, we do this for the love of the conference, and if we aren't having fun doing it, there really isn't a point to it.
