This video introduces the purpose and content of a new course--called Exploring Computer Science (ECS)--that is currently being offered in Los Angeles high schools. ECS was developed through a university/K-12 partnership and is one of just two computer science courses (the other being Advanced Placement Computer Science) that students can take for “G-credit” which, in the state of California, is a minimum college admission requirement. ECS is part of a nationwide movement to bring computer science into our high schools. Unfortunately, most public schools only teach students the minimum in computer-based learning, such as typing and word processing. Unlike any other computer course offered in LAUSD, Exploring Computer Science moves beyond these minimal skill sets to teach students a wider range of computational thinking and problem solving skills as students learn how to design websites, build computer games, develop animation shorts, construct and program robots, and more.
