This video was made to support the "Eat the View" campaign, a citizen-powered effort to petition (eattheview.org/petition) the next President to show leadership on global issues such as climate change and food security by converting part of the White House's 18 acre grounds back into an edible landscape. It made sense in the past for the "First Family" to eat foods grown close to home and - given the climate challenge - it makes sense again. It features me, Roger Doiron, digging a new organic garden on my white house lawn with an invitation to the next President to do the same.

  • Thank you. We've reduced our "food miles" (the average distance food travels) from 1500 miles to about 15 feet!

  • Thanks for your support.

I'm taking this on the road to use in presentations. What a great way to bring grass roots issues to our land!

Love the concept & video. I started The Edible Landscape Project in south Scottsdale as a demonstration site to show people how they can grow food all year long AND do rainwater harvesting. You have my support and I will show your video in my presentations. What else can we help you with besides sending $$? Joan

  • Thanks, Joan. There are different ways of helping...circulating the videos, the petition link, etc. But what you're doing locally in your own project is your most important task. I'm planning on heading out your way next year...maybe I can drop by.

Upon renewing my lease last year I got up the nerve to ask my landlord permission to plant a vegetable garden. I envisioned plowing the side lawn and feeding the neighbors. He allowed 4' out along the 24' south facing wall of my apartment. It was enough to encounter horn worms and encourage wild birds to help me by eating the insects that were eating my tomato leaves. I added three 3' "flower boxes" along the east facing wall of the storage shed and enjoyed three varieties of peas. My radidishes bolted into lovely flowers which podded into delicacies I've shared with friends. I still have peppers and tomatos and mint growing.
My Minister Emeretis (retired) and his wife conduct workshops at my church on consuming food produced within one hundred mile radius. It's a very good thing.
    Keep up the good progress!

Roger, thanks for all you've done and what we should all have thought of sooner. If we don't start now to save our Planet, we won't have to fix all the other problems in the World! SJ Braun
