Thanks everybody for the beautiful comments.
So, I reply in order to your answers:

Music: there are 2 tracks i've put together. They are not famous, but comes from a private library.

Photography: I've used a custom profile on magic bullet looks. Desaturated a lot colors, got more contrast, sometimes added little of vignette, sometimes brightened some dark areas to simulate a reflective fill panel.

Movements: I've shoot all handheld. The dolly movements you see are only made with a smooth movement of my body/arm. The skycrapers are filmed by a double decker bus running!

Thanks again for appreciate my work. I love to give emotions to people with my short films. I'll try to repy to other answers as soon as possible, thanks.

    Ciao,
    complimeti! un ottimo lavoro.
Posso sapere che picture style hai usato?
Io con la 5d solitamente tengo sharpnes e contrasto bassi, quasi a zero, e il colore un pelo desaturato.

Hi there , love this video, B.T.W Ive just got a canon 7d after watching your video and did some test run. Was just wondering about the editing at 00:07, Ive been trying so hard to get this kind of outcome, for sure with some quite decent shots. But still in vain, it would b just great if you could en-light me on that matter. Or anyone will to help is most welcome. thanks... Cheers

I know content rarely makes it into the vimeo discourse, but I watched this video and felt compelled to criticize it for exchanging substance for aesthetics--a common issue throughout most of the praised videos on this site. I understand that the vimeo community is interested in gadgetry, I am too, but the technology's aesthetic--namely, the shallow depth of the 7d, the colorcoding--shouldn't replace the necessity for content. Your disclaimer says New York seen through "an emotional point of view," but does anyone else think that any emotion in this piece is completely contingent on the technology used? You seem to have gone around with your fancy camera, probably as a tourist, shot the city, added some color changes, added music that has nothing to do with the imagery, and then called it emotional. It seems awkwardly impersonal to me. I know the vimeo community doesn't usually criticize work, but I can't understand what I'm watching and why people seem to like it for any other reason than how "pleasant the imagery is." I think people should be more critical, and think about what they put out.
  • Matthew Skibicki 1 year ago
    totally agree max.

I think one of the reasons it's so prominent is the technological advances in DSLR. With so many photographers now having the option of video, they translate their photography into the moving picture. I think Philip Bloom appropriately called it "moving photography".

I actually used to like it and was planning to undertake such a project. But being a film student i feel i have to stay ahead of the game, and i feel this sort of stuff is a pit hole of un-originality.
  • Giuseppe Vetrano 1 year ago
I think cinematography, music, sculpture, photography and every form of ART in general are so beautiful for the reason that everybody can feel a piece of work in a very personal way. So a masterpiece for one person could soon become a disaster for another person. When I've shooted and edited this video, i've done it not only visually, but trying to put into it my "feeling", the sensations I felt during the days I've spent in NY. Sure, I'm a filmmaker, so I made it technologically in the best way I could do it in that situation, and hdslr helped me thanks to the gorgeus quality and possibility to carry around in a easy way.
I appreciate every point of view and I accept every critics, like a chance to get my next work better and better. Thanks for your opinion
  • travispitcher 1 year ago
I can understand the point of view of both of you. It is beautiful and so well composed and it takes talent to bring those shots into a montage and edit it well.
The film doesn't have much of a story or narrative to it except from that visitor point of view.
I would like to argue that this is higher art because of the great movements that exist and that it is more than "moving photography".
Irwin Panofski, film theorist, argued that film is unique because of "the dynamization of space and the spacialization of time" and that is why this is separate from photography or any other art.
Anyways, probably just applying my homework too much to my everyday life, but just an opinion.
    Thanks for your opinions.

I agree with Max, this is the corniest thing I have seen in a long time. Were you recruited by the New York City Travel Bureau or something? It reads like a glossy advertisement. Behind the bells and whistles of whatever piece of equipment you're using, there is a gaping void. The big city alienation effect, which I presume is the "emotion" you're aiming for, is something so trite and played out at this point--the super new fandangled HD is only magnifying the cliche. The success of this piece is only goes to the company that manufactured the camera.

But it's still far far better than I could ever do.

Inspiring... about the "imaginary" dude i think you show NY as avery single person in the outside wants to see it... i've been there only once and its a very magical place and i love to remember ans see it that way... very "emotional" and personal for everyone can see it as they wish...

btw: i dont think the equipment has anything to do in the mater of content... yo can do a pretty amazing thing with a... celphone camera if you plan it right!
  • Pascal plus 9 months ago
I think this is a fantastic video as well. I only wish I had these kinds of skills. Would you like to take a look at one of my videos?

At first I was a little ashamed that I even posted it on a site like this, but your remark about cellphone cameras inspired me =]

I am planning on buying a 7d this summer and it is all I can dream of. I spend every day at work motivated that every hour is one step closer.

Bella la fotografia ma il montaggio ha bisogno di parecchio lavoro. Manca di storia che colleghi le varie immagini.
  • Giuseppe Vetrano 1 year ago

I rarely sit on the fence (too uncomfortable) but I can appreciate the cinematographers' criticism of this being regarded as 'moving photography', while at the same time understanding the photographers' appreciation of the piece as a whole.

The problem that I have with it is that it doesn't really engage on an appropriate emotional level for a city that has suffered from terrorism on a massive scale and the effect of an almost cataclismic financial meltdown.

It's a largely idealised and optimistic view that, while visually stunning, fails to dig beneath the surface and find the city in pain.

To me, it 'feels' as deep as a music video.

On the other hand, at least it's far more creative than anything I've done with my HMC150 (I spend too much time taking photographs).
  • Derek von Schulz 1 year ago
Does every video shot in NYC need to be about the terrorism and pain that is there though? Of course it isn't to be disregarded, but I don't think every video shot there needs to be a reflection of the past.
  • Robert Malcolm 1 year ago
Had Giuseppe not included the expression 'from an emotional point of view' in his description, I would agree, but if you use 'emotional' as a label, your audience will probably expect to see some emotion. This is glossy, well shot and edited and looks beautiful, but it conveys nothing more than that NYC can look glossy and beautiful.

New York is 'The World's City' and as can be imagined, so many people have passed through it, each finding there own emotional interpretation of it.

For me Giuseppe's film captured the essence of the city the way I've always experienced it and I think that @Max Weinman (above) described the film best as "awkwardly impersonal"...though I think that he was trying to say that in a negative way...

Bravo Giuseppe, great film, thank you!

maybe this, and other videos like it do sit between videography and still photography and so we need a critical language that deals with it as new and different way of working to either. Having said that all artworks still seek to evoke something in the viewer and to communicate a point of view - this to me communicates the maker's experience of New York, which may well differ from other's experience.
