"Making of" now available at artofthetitle.com/2010/10/29/the-walking-dead/

"We are arriving at that unique moment in time where the
term "fan-made" becomes moot. This is extraordinary."

- Damon Lindelof, Executive Producer, LOST

"Kudos to Daniel Kanemoto for his terrific fan version of
THE WALKING DEAD opening titles -- they rock big time!"

- Gale Anne Hurd, Producer, THE TERMINATOR, ALIENS, THE ABYSS, THE WALKING DEAD

My favorite "exclusive" from this year's Comic-Con was a beautiful painting by legendary artist Drew Struzan, featuring a horde of zombies from THE WALKING DEAD. Frank Darabont is adapting the apocalyptic Image Comics book created by Robert Kirkman, and man, it looks really, really great.

As I was admiring Struzan's work of art, I wondered what the opening titles to this terrifying new television show might look like... so I animated a spec title sequence using artwork ripped from the pages of the comic, originally illustrated by Charlie Adlard and Tony Moore.

Just so there's no confusion, I'm not affiliated with the production in any way -- I'm simply a huge fan of both Frank Darabont and Robert Kirkman, and this is my attempt at creating a cinematic introduction to one of the all time great "continuing stories of survival horror."

THE WALKING DEAD premieres on October 31st on AMC.

If you don't mind sharing, was this all After Effects work or is there some 3D mixed in? Either way, very impressive, I love the camera moves that go in and out of different layers. Title sequences like this are usually seen in big budget films so big ups!
  • Daniel Kanemoto plus 1 year ago
    Hi Luke --

I animated this all in AfterEffects, setting up all the various layers of artwork in 3D space. I suppose you'd call this 2-and-a-half-D? I was always a big fan of Ub Iwerks and his pioneering multi-plane camera -- I learned how to program camera moves on a giant motion-controlled Oxberry camera stand in back in animation school.

Okay, so I didn't even have a Vimeo account. But I just created one solely so I could tell you how incredibly phenomenal this is. You are my new hero. I will spend every day from now until Halloween hoping someone at AMC will see this, appreciate it the way it should be appreciated, and decide to use it for the show. THIS is the title I want to see every week. Just.....bravo...

Daniel: This is so on the money that I did what I normally don't do: I submitted a stranger's work to the powers-that-be (and no, that does not mean directly to F.D., but an associate of his - best I could do). I hope, come Oct. 31, I will see your work again - in HD. Best of luck. You got my vote!

I lost track of how many times I watched this video today. I, myself, just started reading the comics last week because a friend of mine was excited about seeing the show and I got hooked. I read every issue in about two days. This title sequence is just phenomenal and I couldn't picture anything being better suited for the show. I know that when I tune in on Halloween I will be disappointed if this doesn't show up. The music, the effects, and the editing are just amazing. Rick's gunshot is my favorite part. I signed up for an account just so I could tell you how much I enjoyed your work. Thank you for making me even more excited for a premiere that I already can't wait for! Hope this makes it on air.

This is absolutely amazing and should totally be the actual titles for the show. The only thing I think could be improved is the initial texture, which I think clashes too much with the rest of the piece.

Despite my nitpicking, wow, just wow.
