MY TRUE SELF is a choreography for the 11 performers of the young Italian dance company Fattoria Vittadini. The work strives to expose the mechanism of the desire to be someone else as a means of liberating one's 'true' self and achieving self-fulfillment, and explores the evolution of that desire into the creation of a new and effective image-of-self. Through the employment of images constructed from their respective inner-worlds, the dancers mark territories for themselves in the public arena and set off to tackle the challenges of their separate existence within the safety of a group. While obsessively clinging to their new physicality, the performers aspire to manufacture in their bodies a new effective quality that would enable them to create an alternative reality and to experience themselves differently. They do not always succeed.
Emptiness and a sense of loss set in. And yet, these give birth to small and magical moments, to private and intimate rituals. Out of desperation or coincidence, each performer joins others for a duet or a trio, and the space is rendered a new density. For a moment, it seems as if the performers have actually fulfilled their goals.
Apart from the human factors, MY TRUE SELF also tries to capture the illusive and subtle elements that nurture and influence each individual performer on his quest towards a 'true' self — space, sound, and still objects.
