The Blount County Fire Department held a Dutch oven/cast iron cooking competition to raise funds for its Coats for Our Community program, which helps give coats to children who need them, as well as the community in general. Visitors could sample and vote for competitors, and if they had a larger appetite, could purchase a country meal of beans, fried potatoes, cornbread and chili. All entrants had to cook on site using either charcoal or wood. Last year the program put coats on more than 2,000 Blount County residents with 800 of those being delivered to children in Blount County schools.
