Filmed on 4/6/10 at The Canyons resort in Park City, Utah. A classic late season storm was pounding the Wasatch mountains, leaving behind a bottomless blanket of deep blower pow. Just a few ridgelines over, little cottonwood canyon was shut down due to the danger of such a heavy snowfall. A few lucky folks and I spent the day blazing through the untouched aspen groves with feathery snow blowing over our shoulders on every turn. It was probably one of the best powder days I've ever had. (I say that a lot)

music is from the original score of "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford". Composed by Nick Cave & Warren Ellis (2007)

Epic edit man, definitely sharing this around the GoPro office! Makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside
  •
  • Abe Kislevitz 1 year ago
One suggestion, in final cut I find the footage comes out a little crisper if you turn off frame blending when you're changing speeds. Not sure how it would affect the smoothness of the fast motion though
  • The Provo Bros plus 1 year ago
I haven't tried changing the speed in final cut. I conform the 60p clips to 30fps with cinema tools and it seems to be as smooth as it gets.
  • Abe Kislevitz 1 year ago
Yeah I meant on the shots where you speed it up and are jumping through sections of the video. if you pause you can see on any of those frames a ghost effect of the video, but if in final cut when you speed up those sections I would uncheck frame blend. Also could be a cool look to conform everything to 23.98 in cinema tools and try that out. get a little more of the slowmo action and a filmier look. either way, epic video
  • The Provo Bros plus 1 year ago
your right, I did change speed in final cut. THanks man, those are great suggestions. def gunna try !

That Camelback straw may as well be a snorkel.
  • The Provo Bros plus 1 year ago
it is a snorkel. its called an avalung and it allows you to breath if you get buried under the snow.
  • A SNORKEL!!!! Shit, we needed tanks that day!!!

On this day did you move the camera around on mounts or were you using more than one go pro? I cant tell you how good this video is. I need the on my phone for down times! HA
  • The Provo Bros plus 1 year ago
thats awesome. there should be a podcast for phones and things. I only had one go pro either mounted on my chest or on my handle mount. each clip is essentially a different run from that day.
  •
  • Hey Ian, Sweeeeet edit, I was there with you man!
The video only explains a fraction of how epic that day was! Nice work, would have been funnier to show me trying to keep up with you two! LMAO
  • The Provo Bros plus 1 year ago
yah dick! you were definitely there. in fact the last sequence of clips was that tight aspen tree run where we lost ya! You're right, you can't explain how fun and epic a day like that is, you can only experience it.

What song starts at 1:36? This was an amazing video. Soul skiing at its best! Very emotional.
  •
  • Elise Gubler 1 year ago
I am also dying to know what song starts at 1:36. The first song on your video is from the soundtrack itunes.apple.com/us/album/the-assassination-jesse-james/id265698544 but I don't think the song that starts at 1:36 is. Where can I find it?
  • The Provo Bros plus 1 year ago
apparently its not on the soundtrack. I believe the title is "Mary's Song"..... youtube.com/watch?v=cB9_9_TpdPo
  • James Tarras 1 year ago
I just downloaded the soundtrack recently and this song indeed was on the album. As it says on the youtube clip in the actual video its called "The Legend of Jesse James"

This is so epic! Although the snow and the mask make your face look extremely creepy. Idk why, looks like Billy from the Saw movies. :D Adds to the atmosphere, though. ;)
Anyway, great editing and definately one of my favorite ski videos.

hey just wondering if you had the gopro on a pole like a boom or just held it? cause what ever you did it worked really well!
  • The Provo Bros plus 1 year ago
I have the gopro mounted to the top of my ski pole essentially.
  • Aske Kristiansen 1 year ago
Amazing footage! I'm amazed how steady you're able to hold the GoPro/pole. I guess the powder + slowmotion help you distract attention from any unwanted shaking!? that said, I'm still amazed. btw great editing! :)

this day was so awesome. i was lucky enough to get a free shop pass off of a friend because it looked like little cottonwood wasnt going to be opening up the next morning and i will for sure remember it for the rest of my life. i have no idea the name of the lift (next to ninetynine ninety i believe?) but we got first chair on it when it started turnin at about 11, and that run was seriously the best in bound turns i've ever gotten. here i am eight months later with only a canyons pass so far.

your stuffs my go to for winter stokedness and an inspiration to everybody man, keep it up.
  • The Provo Bros plus 1 year ago
Thanks for the comment Alex. Was certainly a day to remember for a loooong time to come. You were on peak 5, I was over on the north side of the resort. You couldn't go wrong.

wow great video! I just got a gopro and I have a couple question about skiing. What do u think is the best resolution/way to get best video quality for filming when the gopro is mounted on my helmet. Also i dont kno if you have a chest mount but what is the best resolution/ way to get the best video quality when is mounted there. Thanks!
  • Strawn Dixon plus 1 year ago
by the way I have the full HD wide gopro
  • The Provo Bros plus 1 year ago
I like to use the R3 mode exclusively for all mounting locations. Thats 720p, at 60 frames per second. It also gives you the 170 degree field of view. choice

    k thanks!

Such an inspiring video. I've never watched a video where the soundtrack compliments the footage more. It's an edit like this that make kids like me from the northeast, dream about the day they get to go out west and ski a day like this one. Thanks for sharing dude.
  • The Provo Bros plus 1 year ago
I love to hear comments like this. I was from the northeast at one point in time, dreaming about days like this. I feel grateful to be living the dream now, and to be able to share a little bit of that with everyone else.

Absolute MAGIC, both content & edit. Very True, in the sharing lies tremendous beauty; watching/listening is just bliss. Anyone (like me) sitting out for the season can watch this once (or a few more times), and be sated until next season finally rolls around. Also from the northeast, but finally found powder out in the wider world. The moose take the cake, too!
