Tajikistan is one of the poorest countries in the world. It is home to over 200, 000 working children. The failing economy has forced the youngest population to join the workforce to survive on a daily basis. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Tajikistan has dealt with a relatively unheard of bloody civil war that destroyed the infrastructure and whatever economic stability the country had. With the onset of the most recent global recession in 2008, developing countries like Tajikistan have felt the effects of the economic downturn harder than developed nations. This film looks at the effects of the global recession on the Tajik economy and how it has increased the need for child labour in order maintain some stability. It also focuses on how the government of Tajikistan and international organizations can work to eradicate the need for child labour through education of both children and parents, opportunities of financial alternatives, and by making efforts to change how easily acceptable child labour is in Tajikistan.
