Steven, you really outdid yourself this time.
I have to say I was really moved by this one.
The narration really brought something out and made it even more worthwhile.

Steven I always look forward to your work. This one is truly beautiful. It reminded me of being a kid and sitting at the beach at my grandparents with no thoughts or worries. Just enjoying life..Thanks for sharing..

    Awesome job as usual!!!

The narration was great as well :)

Thanks Brian...I'm sorry I'm so lazy about the mp4 format...by the time I get to the encode, I'm just burned out and want to use my presets.

great job Steven! I've been watching all of your videos and i must admit that i am stunned by their quality and clearness. What software(s) do you use to edit, color correct/grade...etc...? And most importantly, what is your setting to render the video out? Thanks for the info!

I don´t understand all the words from the video because of my bad english, but it´s not necessary cause the images and music are full of emotion and beauty and say it all. I love your works, you know capture as nobody big things in small details and intense emotions, something that is not accessible to the entire world. Thank you again.
I think that you couldn´t read a message I wrote you some time ago where I asked you, if possible, to have a look at my last video (EDEA Granada 2008). Sure, you have little time, but I would be really excited if you can give me your impression about it. Thanks again and a huge hug from Spain.

    Ana,

Thank you for your comments. I actually did watch your video but just didn't get time to comment. I will be sure to do that very soon. In the meantime, I translated the words to Uncluttered World. There does not seem to be a spanish word for "Uncluttered" but what it means is "simple" without a lot of "stuff" in one's life. Let me know if this makes sense:

There are people that understand the makings of a good film. You can have the technique down, understand the importance of contrast and composition, and maybe even are able to capture beautiful images. Steven consistently amazes me, because he takes all that skill, and makes it look, absolutely, 100%, effortless.

"An Uncluttered World", is yet another example of this man's talent. To not only be able to capture all these amazing qualities of a great moving picture, but use these, to tell a story. And that, is what separates someone good at what they do, with someone great.

Exceptional work Steven. Talk with you soon.

    Cheers!

No mixer. I used a Zoom H4 sound recorder in my laundry room (it has the most insulated sound). The sound is pretty much raw from that unit...didn't tweak it at all in post.

Steven, I haven't visited your profile in awhile. I've felt down for a few days - my oldest son just started kindergarten. I haven't cried. I promised myself I wouldn't. Then I watched this, and realized, his world is just beginning - uncluttered.

I cried. Your work is amazing. This piece is a work of art. I'm leaving now to go to the park and slide with my son!

This is really awesome. I live in Seattle, so it's nice to see other people taking in the Pacific Northwest. Most people here are rushed, and can't see that on the horizon is the tallest volcano in the continental United States, two amazing, snow-covered mountain ranges on both the west and east side of the city, the massive puget sound decorated with thick, moss-covered trees. Hopefully more people who live up here will see this and slow themselves down. Thanks for sharing!

  • Paul Langereis 1 year ago
    Hi Steven,

I can understand the large following you have (me included). Your eye for composition is amazing, and your editing is flawless. As Matthew mentioned, you really bring out the beauty in the world around you, and it is nice that you are able to tap into your local surroundings so amazingly well. If I could tap into a minute amount of your ability I would be a very happy individual (I am not asking for advice as I like to learn by doing). Your videos are like beautiful poetry, and the voice over was like icing on the cake. Another wonderful piece of work! I, like the many others who follow your work, thank you. You are truly an inspiration for me as I begin on my video journey! PS, I particularly love your demo reel as well.....Outstanding!!

I also use a Zoom for voice overs, although I prefer my walk in closet! Deadens the rebound beautifully. I enjoy your work and have tried applying your ultra-wide screen to several projects. Could you slow down a bit so the rest of us can catch up?

    Good stuff, keep it up.

O.K. Steve, if you won't slow down.... will you give some advice to someone trying to get better at this game that's approximately 2.5 light years behind you? Could you take a look at the first 15 seconds of this clip and tell me how I can get rid of the trailing edges of the windmill blade? vimeo.com/1687451 I'm don't know if it was the fast shutter speed (didn't use ND filter, so had shutter turned fast) or it could be interlacing, or just the woes of 60i on something moving relatively fast. I'm also using an XH-A1 but with standard lens. Edited Vegas 8 Pro in 60i to 720P wmv to Vimeo.

    Excellent work Steven!

You are the reason I got into film. I stumbled onto this site somehow and after watching your videos, I felt an inspiration I have never felt before. I've been going through some very tough times in my life, and I had lost my passion for all things I used to enjoy. I felt very sad and disconnected. Your videos touched my soul and sparked a new passion in my life. After two weeks of devoting every free second to learning everything about film, I just posted my first video... I hope you get a chance to see it and comment on it, it will mean the world to me. I hope one day I can get to your level and inspire someone with my videos the way your videos inspire many people on this site.

    Steven, your stuff is amazing.

Can you tell us a little about how you graded this? In particular, I am interested in your opening shot.

Also, what lens did you use for that opening shot? The sharpness is incredible. Did you crop the output? Wondering about the aspect ratio.

    Thanks so much! amazing work.
  • Steven Dempsey 1 year ago
    Thank you Benjamin.

Regarding the grading, I used the three point color correction tool in Premiere to white balance the way I felt was pleasing. I brought up the blue in the mids and highlight (the Nikon lens tend to be a little on the warm side) and left the shadows in their raw state because I wanted to preserve the rich black.

I then used the levels tool to boost the blacks just short of crushing them using the histogram as a guide. I left the highlights as I shot them except for a few shots that were dark. Usually I find working at the highlight end in levels will actually burn out a shot a little too much unless there is a lot of information in that particular upper range.

For all the moving shots up to the waterfall stuff I used one of my favorite lenses; Nikon 24mm f2.8 set to both f5.6 and f8 depending on the shot. Being able to close the lens down to this f-stop with the Ultimate allows me to get the maximum sharpness possible from the glass.

If you look down a few posts, I describe the cropping process for the final file.

    I hope this helps.
