Oh my god this is SICK!! In a great way. Loved your treatment of titles. I may have to use your technique as "inspiration" in the future. :-) Definitely one of the coolest videos I've seen on Vimeo. Awesome, awesome work.

Soooo, you didn't kill the helpless creature, you just tortured it for a while?

In the age of CGI, there is no excuse for torturing a helpless animal. Letting the fish go does not absolve your inhumane treatment.

How would you like it if someone decided holding you under water would be fun for them? And then did it.
  • Thomas Lew plus 1 year ago
except that he didn't kill it and it's a fish so yeah..
  • Bartosz Barlowski 1 year ago
try making a CGI breathless fish... good luck. He could have ate it at the end.
  • Video by Wes plus 1 year ago
Soooo, you guys are justifying cruelty?
    Interesting.
And you know for sure the fish that is released is the same fish that was taped?

Not having to resort to the obvious is what great art is about, that is what great artists do.
I am suggesting that expressing a fish dying for air does not require videotaping a fish dying, or a CG fish dying for that matter.
  • Thomas Lew plus 1 year ago
Maybe you don't think it's art but everybody has their own opinion of what is art and what is beautiful. There are so many problems and suffering in the world and one fish that is temporarily out of the water really doesn't matter.

    Also it's a fish..
  • Video by Wes plus 1 year ago
I never said it wasn't art, those are your words not mine.
Nonetheless, much suffering and many problems in the world are wrought by those that feel temporary cruelty is justifiable.
    It simply isn't.
Though the images are compelling and skillfully created, representing the idea of a fish being suffocated, does not require being being cruel to an innocent animal.
It is not my responsibility to educate you, but I sincerely I hope that one day you understand what these types of image creation imply, and that your spirit might one day accommodate compassion for an innocent creature.

p.s. I once had my head chopped off in a movie, it's in a jar on my desk watching me type this. I must go and change my fluids now.
  • Damon Stea plus 1 year ago
Wes I completely agree with your moral considerations, I think that the message of the film is vastly complicated by the methods use to create the art.

It's a beautiful film, but I'm not going to give it a like because it's essentially beautifully shot torture porn. PETA has had a stable of fake (real looking and acting) animals for the last decade specifically so no one has to torture a living thing to make a film.

All you have to do is be proactive and compassionate. No one should be hurt to make a film.

Interesante concepto. Exquisita realización. Excelente música. ¿Crueldad con tal de conseguir un buen plano? Sí. Queremos creer que el pez no murió, pero ¿podemos estar seguros de que el pez que liberas al final es el mismo pez del vídeo?. No, no podemos estar seguros. Enhorabuena, Carles. Y enhorabuena Albert Blanch, Albert Blanch, Albert Blanch, Albert Blanch, el vídeo es magnífico.

This film was amazing, i really enjoyed that quick camera angle drop from the top view to the front face shot of the fish. Was that done by camera or a angle view in AE or Motion?

Hola Jesús. He leido tu comentario sobre mi vídeo H2O.
Muchas gracias.

JAJAJA s'esta liant q dona gust.

    The fish don't DIE!!!
A carp lives outside the water some minutes (about 15-30). In the shooting of this piece the fish maybe outside water no more than 2 minutes.

I know Albert from the primary school, and is a lover of nature and an advocate for animals. I think that your criticism about the fish is very hard. The carp not suffered.

Oh man... that was an amazing short. Your editing was incredible. Most film makers do not have an eye for typographic elements, but your compositions and effects seem to. Very nice.

Those with the "animal cruelty" angle... I hope you realize that every piece of animal you eat... cow, pig, duck, chicken, lamb, and yes... fish, most likely endured more torture than this carp went through... so don't even start.

    Bravo on the film making.

It was a nice video.I don't like the idea of having the fish out of water for so long and torturing it just to make a video though. I realize that it could have been eaten all the same, but there is a difference in harming an animal for substances and harming an animal for art.

  • Damon Stea plus 1 year ago
I think it's important for any of you to note that the warnings in films that state: "No animals were harmed" does not mean "no animals were killed." It means no animals suffered in any way during the filming.

All professional productions who hope to exhibit their films must have a PETA (or other animal care observer) present during all shooting hours to allow for this subtext. Modern films which fail to adhere to these standards can be and often are sued for animal cruelty, since it is illegal in the US to perform cruel behavior to any animal for the purpose of a motion picture.

I'm not sure where you filmed this, so I can't presume what the laws were pertaining to the shoot, but ethically, if you give a damn, there are entire companies of people whose sole job is to provide you with animatronics and CG composites that are used in every major motion picture since the 80's.

    To Damon Stea, Malcom Man
Nice to see someone that understands, and is aware of the laws governing cruelty for the sake of "art".
I have used authorized observers when using animals, they are mandatory on professional projects whether or not you intend to depict injury or not. Animals can be hurt on a set in many ways, as can people if you're not careful.
To those that prefer to rationalize the cruelty, know that your attitude and acceptance to animal cruelty isn't tolerated in professional situations, nor are those that cannot figure out how to depict images such as these, without actually creating the cruelty, needed or employed in professional situations.
A cavalier attitude towards this issue, reveals lack of professional experience, exposes your lack of humanity, and forfeits your credibility.
I hope one day you become successful, work on international level projects and make tons of money.
You will have the great opportunity to look back on you and the unfortunate attitude you have today, and maybe realize how embarrassed some are for you.

p.s. advocates for animals don't torture them.

Mixed emotions watching this. Really great looking film and direction. However, I feel a good amount of sorrow for the fact this fish suffered so much to help you make it. It's akin to almost-drowning an animal to catch the panicked actions it takes facing death. No animals being harmed doesn't generally mean "No animals killed".
  •
  • Nathan 1 year ago
ah but what if he ate the fish in the clip and had a substitute fish that he let go....
sure the fish suffered but we're at the top of the food chain... theres much worse things that happen in the world these days...granted that does not justify torturing an animal...
    im just saying...

  • rickflick 11 months ago
I'm not sure if there was much actual suffering experienced by the fish. A little time out of water is not likely to be serious from the fishes point of view. However, I can see that many would feel that just the depiction of possible suffering could be upsetting to some viewers.
As I watched I was thinking to myself, gee I hope they refreshed the fish frequently. The takes were short enough not to be a concern to me.
    Anyway, great film!
