21. Using the Snyderphonics Manta on the Android Lust …
1 year ago
I recently returned from a five week tour with Android Lust where I played the Manta as my main instrument . The Manta is a touch sensitive instrument interface which can be programmed in an environment such as Max/MSP.

For this tour the Manta was controlling a Virus Rack and a Mono Evolver via a patch I wrote in Max For Live. I'm also processing Shikhee's vocals in real time (with a granular Max For Live effect) and controlling the parameters with the Manta in "centroid" mode (turns it into an XY multitouch surface).

Sorry for the spotty sound (camera microphone).

Just seen on snyderphonics' website that the Manta can be used for videos too. Would love to get it! :D I must say it's also beautiful!
Congratulations Chris, it seems to be a little complicated to play music with it.
And I love the pictures! <3 Looks very good!

It can be used for just about anything via Max/MSP - so yeah, video, audio, lighting... whatever you can think of.

It's not very complicated at all, it all depends on how you choose to set it up.

The forthcoming MantaMate will allow it to interface with synthesizers without a computer, putting a more direct focus on playing it as an instrument interface (it seems demeaning to call it a mere "controller").

I suppose it could be overwhelming requiring an open ended piece of software like Max to operate, but it includes some basic patches for using it as a sequencer, a pseudo-keyboard, etc.

    I think it's amazing, and it's a pleasure to play! :)

    Oh yeah, I see that!
I'd love to get one and try. It's very amazing that a device like this can do so many things. :)

Can't wait to see MantaMate! I must say I'm really attracted by this!

And for The Human Animal: What songs required the Manta to play? ;)

It wasn't used on the album - I bought it just a month before the Animalia Tour.

Live it really depended on the song: Sometimes I was manipulating Shikhee's vocals with granular effects, sometimes I was playing it as a pseudo keyboard controlling a Virus and Evolver. Sometimes I played drums! What I was doing was very particular to the song.
