Texas State Fair in Dallas. Recently acquired twixtor and wanted to test it's capabilities. The state fair at night is a very demanding environment for a camera. Low light was challenging for the GH1 so there is some noise along with a little warping after applying twixtor. No grading was used. Clip was shot at 720/60p and was slowed to 240 fps. Overall did really well but you can make out some noise and artifacts. Should've used my 50mm instead of the 20mm for tighter shot control but I didn't have it with me.

(Not sure why, but after uploading there seems to be a lot of stuttering on the horses from the opening scene regardless of the format. I've uploaded in 264 as well, and it still does it. It's smooth as butter on my desktop.)

I'm going to play with this in Twixtor Pro using the mask function to see if it improves the quality. I'll upload the results later.

Very pretty! I just acquired a 5D, but sadly won't be able to attend the fair this year.

Just wondering, is this using the "pro" version of Twixtor, or the regular. Looks great either way!

Thanks. I have both but used the regular version. I haven't been able to figure out how to use the masking with the pro version.

I love how you take the excitement of the rides and slowing it down to a moment of beauty. Very nice!

"Clip was shot at 720/60p and was slowed to 240 fps." Me thinks you have an extra 0 in there somewhere.

For a shot like this you won't get away with using the mask function. Your better off using a high contrast B&W image as the alternative motion source. Twixtor works better on dynamic scenes. So for example dramatic ramping. Therefore your able to get rid of warping by speeding certain parts up quickly to 100% speed.

Twixtor should be applied to a solid in AAE with the source set to the actual clip. Apply twixtor to a lossless clip and not to .mp4 for better results. You will also find twixtor works better between 2 & 5%. The warping needs to be addressed by using keyframes on sensitivity and blend type.

Wow, thanks Joe, I'll give that a shot. Really useful information. Thanks for sharing!

Is your GH1 hacked, and if so, at what settings?
  • Robert 1 year ago
Hi Chris... I haven't hacked mine yet.
  • Chris Colton plus 1 year ago
Ok. I would definitely recommend you do, the visual quality improves a ton. If you hack at very high settings (like I did) you may have some instability when shooting at 60fps (which is why I asked).

Thanks Chris... it's in my plans. I've been reviewing lpowell's settings over at DVX. From what I'm reading, they're pretty stable.

They seem to yield a lower visual quality than the Ptool's "C" settings, but they are more stable. I've only had some instability in 720p60 with C settings. In 1080p24 it's stabile (except in very rare circumstances) and the image is amazingly clear.
