Coleran Reel 2008.06 HD
Showreel of screen design work for various films that I have worked on over the last 9 years.
There is an iPhone compatible version here as well, as long as a collection of older reels and other graphic work that will grow over time as I get them up online.
My last reel for a long time ;)
Working in software now on a unique new product called Flow for Gridiron Software.

Which would you say is more difficult to design/execute, on set playback or post-replace?
Is any of this software actually interactive?
What blogs do you read?
Sorry about all the questions, I'm just really blown away.
Neither is easier or harder. Still all needs designing and animating, although I must say, post is far less stressful.
"Is any of this software actually interactive?"
Nope. Never let the talent touch anything. There is a reason they sometimes need that entourage and all those assistants. It would take way too long to build it interactive. That is all just animated sequences with pseudo interaction.
Mark
We are going to public beta in the next few weeks.
Congratulations
Mega-Chingon.
Good stuff indeed.
man you got so good taste and talent ! Thanx !
One question , do you do all ? or do you for example make the whole concept and them other people finish it,like the old animators used to do, they draw the keyframes and the other animator did the frames in between ?
BEAUTIFULL.
Some of the earlier stuff was Art Directed and designed by a good friend, Simon Staines at Useful Companies and a lot of the later stuff is all my work. It depends on the production and location as to what I have produced.
The way we carved up alot of the productions meant that a single person would do a whole section, the look and feel, to keep it consistent.
I usually do everything but occasionally just create the designs and hand them off to others to animate and playback on set.
Age? 39 in a few weeks ;)
Worked in graphic design for 6 years before jumping to motion graphics which i did for almost 11 years.
I suppose not, but it must take a hell of effort to make a whole new interface, while thinking of how it can look ergonomic and functional.
These interfaces are my main inspiration in designing web sites nowadays, and the reason why I switched to Linux for a better control over the interface.
Now I have a reference and a place to look for inspiration and encouragement when the tears of frustration and grief over my web designs overwhelm me. Thanks! :)
Although I cannot post HTML links here, you might want to go to Flickr and look up the user cancoleran.
I have full res stills of almost every screen I have done.
Cheers
Thanks for the info, I'll bookmark that post haste :)
Incidently, the music is pretty cool too, did you do that too?
Let my blindness be forgiven, and thanks again :)
There is nothing different or unique about the techniques used. It is just about the combination and how they are applied. I will be getting down and recording the classes for FXPHD this weekend and you may get your wish.
Looking at general motion graphics resources is as good a start as any. I have always learned most by looking at others. Pulling apart, recreating and trying to make my own.
I must admit alot of films have rather terrible looking interfaces, but the chosen few (Ones you have created) look absolutely stunning and realstic to boot.
Well done, you are an inspiration for all aspiring motionographers (if thats a word).
Thanks.
I'm not the only person doing this, and despite how things sometimes turn out, everyone I have ever met who does this have some real talent. Sometimes, time, budget and productions conspire to make people and their work look worse than it is.
You didn't think I was gonna put the bad stuff on my reel? ;)
Done my fair share of dodgy work. Filed under S for Shame.
Make a dodgy reel and maybe i can see how good/bad i am!
Really cooolll works!!!!!
It is actually a roundabout.
I look at the very cool stuff people like Adaptive Path and Ideo do, lab and homebrew projects, then take that as inspiration and make it look real (or not sometimes).
Flow is coming along and thanks for the patience. It is going to be an interesting few weeks! It has been an interesting switch going from the 'made-up' stuff to making real software, but it has been a blast so far. It is alot harder!
Just want to tell you how much I envy you that you worked on all those movies. Interface motion design must be so cool to do, how to get a job like this? :P cheers and thanks for sharing.
Is there any ressource on the net where you tell about your workflow ? thx and keep up the good work
As for getting into this kind of work.. I guess a combo of interest, preparation and opportunity. If your into, create something along that vein and then hit the people who do this. There is a high burnout rate in this work, for many reasons. When working, it can be very intense, then when not working, the gaps can be just as difficult. For those reasons alone there are continous opportunities opening up. Just do a bit of research on the playback companies.
In the next few months I will be starting a blog dedicated to this subject. Looking at the work done, who's doing it and how, so keep your eyes open.

Great work. Do you ever do small fry jobs like music vides for indie bands? I'd love to have an entire video done with your style.
Cheers
Gavin
now i know it was YOU, all this time ! YOU!
:) extranice work man. keep it
I can't wait to get my hands on flow. I saw the demo at AENY.
What a change for you, being a motion graphics artists who makes fantasy interfaces to a UI designer making software for motion graphics artists.
You are the proverbial rock star.
It's not quite as advanced as some of the work that you're involved in, but the FBI screen which DTox punches through was inspired elements of your work.
I'm working extremely hard to get my work noticed, currently under development is a new user friendly website, tell me Mark, how did you manage to make it big in the industry and become so well know? What's your secret?
Splurj
There is fortunately (unfortunatley?) no secret. I never tried to get 'noticed'. Just plugged away and built up the reel.
I think I really like the reference I read recently as to what luck is. Luck is preparation meets opportunity. You look pretty damn prepared so just keep getting your stuff out there and keep your eyes open for the opportunities.

these are real mac themes based on your "The Island" interface design
You have a brilliant design aesthetic and are an inspiration to real and faux interface designers!
really awesome!
I was wondering whether a video recording of your talk on screen graphics at Motion8 is available anywhere? I would love to get some insights into your creative process.
Cheers,
Steve

There's one thing I'm curious about: Do you think about usability while designing, or are you simply trying to make them look good?
Can't wait to see more of your work in theaters.
As someone who does screen graphics I totally understand how difficult it is to create this stuff from nothing, under tight budget and time constraints. You are truly at the top of your field.
I would be honored if you took a look at my screen graphics work…

The VFX Breakdown has some… as well as the Foot Chase Sequence (Inspired by DeJa Vu) and the Boeing videos as well. I designed, tracked and comp'd every single one of them.
Inspiring, beautiful work Mark.
no wonder if i see any other movies with the impressive visual design . . . it should be mark . . . :D
Mark you simply Rock . . .
Also, I just discovered you are from Ottawa where I live and I think that's pretty cool.
btw.. great style man !!
do you know who made the ones for Iron Man... ?
that was awesome too (the computer iterface...when he designs the "suits")
cheers!!!!
I loved the bourne series also! Awesome now that I know that you did them :]
Your work is really an Inspiration
