1. Coleran Reel 2008.06 HD
Showreel of screen design work for various films that I have worked on over the last 9 years.

There is an iPhone compatible version here as well, as long as a collection of older reels and other graphic work that will grow over time as I get them up online.

My last reel for a long time ;)

Working in software now on a unique new product called Flow for Gridiron Software.

Very nice work. I always wondered who got to design the futuristic computers used in sci fi movies. Now I know.
  • Mark Coleran plus 1 year ago
    Thanks

  • This is ridiculously amazing.
Which would you say is more difficult to design/execute, on set playback or post-replace?
Is any of this software actually interactive?
    What blogs do you read?
Sorry about all the questions, I'm just really blown away.
  • Mark Coleran plus 1 year ago
"Which would you say is more difficult to design/execute, on set playback or post-replace?"

Neither is easier or harder. Still all needs designing and animating, although I must say, post is far less stressful.

"Is any of this software actually interactive?"

Nope. Never let the talent touch anything. There is a reason they sometimes need that entourage and all those assistants. It would take way too long to build it interactive. That is all just animated sequences with pseudo interaction.

Looks awesome! Can you tell us what Electric Image does and why you use it?
  • Mark Coleran plus 1 year ago
Electric Image is one of the older 3D applications. Compared to some, it doesn't do much, but what it did, it did very well.

Wow man you are like the Mark Coleran of the Motionographers, I want to be able to do so cool, with quality, style, class, complexion etc.. works as you do,
man you got so good taste and talent ! Thanx !

One question , do you do all ? or do you for example make the whole concept and them other people finish it,like the old animators used to do, they draw the keyframes and the other animator did the frames in between ?
    BEAUTIFULL.
  • Mark Coleran plus 1 year ago
    Thanks DQ

Some of the earlier stuff was Art Directed and designed by a good friend, Simon Staines at Useful Companies and a lot of the later stuff is all my work. It depends on the production and location as to what I have produced.

The way we carved up alot of the productions meant that a single person would do a whole section, the look and feel, to keep it consistent.

I usually do everything but occasionally just create the designs and hand them off to others to animate and playback on set.

I've always wondered about the existence of these kind of interfaces in real world installations.

I suppose not, but it must take a hell of effort to make a whole new interface, while thinking of how it can look ergonomic and functional.

These interfaces are my main inspiration in designing web sites nowadays, and the reason why I switched to Linux for a better control over the interface.

Now I have a reference and a place to look for inspiration and encouragement when the tears of frustration and grief over my web designs overwhelm me. Thanks! :)
  • Mark Coleran plus 1 year ago
    Thanks Engleek

Although I cannot post HTML links here, you might want to go to Flickr and look up the user cancoleran.

I have full res stills of almost every screen I have done.

    Wow, fast answer!

Thanks for the info, I'll bookmark that post haste :)

Incidently, the music is pretty cool too, did you do that too?
  • Mark Coleran plus 1 year ago
Unfortunately not. There is a credit on the end of the reel.
  •
  • Engleek 1 year ago
Unfortunately, that part of the credits was hidden under the play bar at time of writing, and reading your answer coincided with me seeing it on the now downloaded high-definition version...

Let my blindness be forgiven, and thanks again :)

Im a huge fan Mark! I'm also taking your FXPHD class and can't wait to see more. Very impressed!! Im a jr UI/motion guy, any suggestions on where i can go to learn/study background animations for On Screen Ui?
  • Mark Coleran plus 1 year ago
    Thanks Anthony

There is nothing different or unique about the techniques used. It is just about the combination and how they are applied. I will be getting down and recording the classes for FXPHD this weekend and you may get your wish.

Looking at general motion graphics resources is as good a start as any. I have always learned most by looking at others. Pulling apart, recreating and trying to make my own.

Mr. Coleran! Your 'THAT MAN'!. The man who makes all these wonderful interfaces i have seen over the years in numerous films.

I must admit alot of films have rather terrible looking interfaces, but the chosen few (Ones you have created) look absolutely stunning and realstic to boot.

Well done, you are an inspiration for all aspiring motionographers (if thats a word).

    Thanks.
  • Mark Coleran plus 1 year ago
    Thanks adam

I'm not the only person doing this, and despite how things sometimes turn out, everyone I have ever met who does this have some real talent. Sometimes, time, budget and productions conspire to make people and their work look worse than it is.

You didn't think I was gonna put the bad stuff on my reel? ;)

Done my fair share of dodgy work. Filed under S for Shame.
  • adam riozzi 1 year ago
Good point, but what i mean is your work LOOKS real when it is 'used' by the actor. Which is the key i think.

Make a dodgy reel and maybe i can see how good/bad i am!

Great stuff. The movie industry pays you for Interface experiments! Don't let the likes of Adaptive Path, IDEO or other UI company's let in on your little secret ;). Signed up for Flow's beta almost a year ago. Realy looking forward to using it, after watching your showreel even more. I hope you are enjoying these last weeks to the of the first launch.
  • Mark Coleran plus 1 year ago
    Thanks Adam

    It is actually a roundabout.

I look at the very cool stuff people like Adaptive Path and Ideo do, lab and homebrew projects, then take that as inspiration and make it look real (or not sometimes).

Flow is coming along and thanks for the patience. It is going to be an interesting few weeks! It has been an interesting switch going from the 'made-up' stuff to making real software, but it has been a blast so far. It is alot harder!

  • Mark Coleran plus 1 year ago
    Thanks guys.

As for getting into this kind of work.. I guess a combo of interest, preparation and opportunity. If your into, create something along that vein and then hit the people who do this. There is a high burnout rate in this work, for many reasons. When working, it can be very intense, then when not working, the gaps can be just as difficult. For those reasons alone there are continous opportunities opening up. Just do a bit of research on the playback companies.

In the next few months I will be starting a blog dedicated to this subject. Looking at the work done, who's doing it and how, so keep your eyes open.

    Hey Mark,

I can't wait to get my hands on flow. I saw the demo at AENY.

What a change for you, being a motion graphics artists who makes fantasy interfaces to a UI designer making software for motion graphics artists.

You are the proverbial rock star.

Hi Mark, as one of the people who has been a major influence and source of inspiration for myself and others over the years would you kindly give me your thought's on the DTOX 'MAKE YOU CRY' music video which I recently created?

It's not quite as advanced as some of the work that you're involved in, but the FBI screen which DTox punches through was inspired elements of your work.

I'm working extremely hard to get my work noticed, currently under development is a new user friendly website, tell me Mark, how did you manage to make it big in the industry and become so well know? What's your secret?

    Splurj
  • Mark Coleran plus 1 year ago
Very, very nice work Scott, and thanks for the hat tip.

There is fortunately (unfortunatley?) no secret. I never tried to get 'noticed'. Just plugged away and built up the reel.

I think I really like the reference I read recently as to what luck is. Luck is preparation meets opportunity. You look pretty damn prepared so just keep getting your stuff out there and keep your eyes open for the opportunities.

Hey Mark -- how are you able to post shots of your stuff? The screen work I've done on movies is NDA'd up the butt.

You have a brilliant design aesthetic and are an inspiration to real and faux interface designers!
  • Mark Coleran plus 1 year ago
Once a movie is released there is no longer an NDA on the work. Anyone who says otherwise is perhaps stretching the idea somewhat. You are allowed and entitled to show the work you have created in a folio or reel. Anything else is a restriction of trade and I know some states look down on that rather unfavorably.

Mark this is the best work I've seen at Motion 08. Really astonishing, I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. I also like how you used the lower 3rds to provide brief descriptions of each piece. I'm a student from Ex'pression in Emeryville and we really enjoyed your talk on screen graphics. Really inspirational, and what a cool way of describing luck. Keeps you focused on your own goal, and opportunity should follow.

    Great stuff, very inspirational.

There's one thing I'm curious about: Do you think about usability while designing, or are you simply trying to make them look good?

Can't wait to see more of your work in theaters.
  •
  • Paul Stephen Carlin plus 9 months ago
I am humbled and inspired. For all these years I have been using your work as inspiration without even knowing it was yours. Spending hours in rooms with no windows trying to pause the DVD on the right frame. You make me work harder by raising the bar so high.

As someone who does screen graphics I totally understand how difficult it is to create this stuff from nothing, under tight budget and time constraints. You are truly at the top of your field.

I would be honored if you took a look at my screen graphics work…

    sparkmedia.com

The VFX Breakdown has some… as well as the Foot Chase Sequence (Inspired by DeJa Vu) and the Boeing videos as well. I designed, tracked and comp'd every single one of them.

Absolutely impressive. The amount of detail in these graphics is ridiculous. What I love most is when these graphics actually look like computer software and don't have ridiculous fractals for no reason and all that kind of fluff and most of your graphics are perfect in that sense. They are cool to look at, but really do look like software that could exist.

Also, I just discovered you are from Ottawa where I live and I think that's pretty cool.
