‘Birding By Ear At Bernheim’ takes inspiration from an audio guide that teaches listeners how to recognise regional birdcalls, by phonetically representing them into memorable phrases or ‘birdie-talk’. This method not only gives the birds a human voice but also a regional dialect; inherently linking the birds and their song to the region and it’s people.
Using Bernheim staff as my cast, individuals and groups perform familiar bird vocalizations from different locations within Bernhiem’s forest and arboretum. As the film unfolds, these performances are brought together; calls and songs are answered back, to and forth – mimicking the natural cacophony of birdsong.
