Really interesting and surreal. I love how the dialogue, narration and music are layered over one another.

If you can judge the quality of a short film by it's ability to keep you watching with intrigue ... well, this one kept me intrigued. Muito Bom, que prazer.

    Valeu!
  •
  • Very good plot, very well shot and good use of lighting

So I have one comment to make ... the narration! seem childish and self explanatory, which is totally unnecessary, the film could have been understood perfectly well without the narration. That was on purpose?

    Excellent work

nice music, i agree however, the narrative does seem to point out the obvious, however the overall story, is great, excellent camera work, and i also like the natural light, it creates a massive sense of realism about the film as a whole. good job.

Hmm. I guess the narrative wasn't necessary, but it had a kind of lyrical quality for me that really worked. Great visuals, and I especially liked the character of Xuxu. The music fits really well too.

    Really brilliant work!

David...I just watched this again...even better the second time...do you do your own special effects?
  • David Dutton plus 1 year ago
Hey Torin! Thanks, I did do all the sfx, but I'm looking forward to having someone talented take over that aspect for me.

What a nice short. You had some great shots in there. May I ask what camera you used? A DSLR? I enjoyed the voice-over very much even if it wasn't necessary. It kept the film interesting throughout and added this sweet simpleness that I very much love in films. Keep up the good work!

I, personally, enjoyed the narrative, especially intertwined with the visuals and soundtrack.

I agree that the story carried well enough purely within the visuals, but I felt the narrative added a nice punctuation that might have been lost without it.

It seems as though one person made a comment and the rest decided to ride the coat tails. I guess that's why there is a difference between an artist and a critic.

Luckily, you don't need those coat tails... ;)

    Great video.
  • David Dutton plus 1 year ago
Haha thanks Brett. Actually I see their point but I did ultimately decide to go with the simple narration to create a feeling, like we were looking at something dramatic from the tone of a "See Dick and Jane run" childrens book.
  • Brett Vaughn plus 1 year ago
Which is exactly what added to your short. I also dug the fact that it seemed as though it was leaning toward a vert staunch substance abuse message and then flips on it's end to a surreal punchline.

I don't understand people's aversion to narration. But, again I can't help but notice... often times the biggest critics are those with the least content of substance.

I saw some of your other vids... You've got talent. Nice raw quality... Keep it up!

  • I think this would've been a really good piece if a.) the beautiful inspiring artwork wasn't a poorly drawn anime robot, and b.) you ditched the twist ending in favor of something darker or just more poignant. Also I'm not sure if the vignetting was a result of the camera equipment you used, or some kind of Magic Bullet video effect, but it was very irritating. That type of thing is so cliche it becomes patronizing in a way, like you think we're so stupid we're not gonna notice it. Or maybe the person applying the vignette is stupid? Anyway, nice video.
  • David Dutton plus 1 year ago
a)Sorry you don't like our Robot.
    b) I wasn't trying to make something dark.
    c) Sorry, I'm the stupid one. I liked the look of the vignette.

Case in point. Some people that are lacking in talent having little better to do than go to other people's first rate videos and make overly critical comments from a standpoint of very little grounding and background.

    You'll get them.

    Cheers!
  • Brett,

    That comment barely makes sense.

Not entirely sure what you mean by "a standpoint of very little grounding and background"--I'm guessing what you mean to say, in "big boy language", is that I'm not qualified to criticize this work, because I don't have a gold ADDY award.

Well, maybe you're right. I don't have a gold ADDY award, so I don't know what that feels like. However I'd counter back by saying, if a video requires a gold ADDY award to appreciate, maybe there's something wrong with the video?

As for grouping me in with "some people that are lacking in talent", I definitely take fewer self-portraits than you, so I guess you have me beat there as well. Despite being outclassed severely by the professional freelance photographer, I still contest that vignettes are generally overused.

Please forgive me, I forgot that Vimeo is a place where only compliments are valid, and anyone with an expensive camera is an "artist"... for a minute there I thought maybe I'd have a different opinion; try something other than incessant back-patting, but boy did you shut me up good.

You'll get them (more gold ADDYs).

    Cheers!

Have a look at "Millions" last five or six comments on Vimeo video's. Pretty much tells the story.

Brett, I understand your effort to blindly defend the audiovisual creation. People can give their opinion because they are sensitive and can express their responses to the impact of images and sound (and the story, of course). Anyway, the author is independent, has its own way to express, and many and varied are our opinions, nothing will change. That's the beauty of the work shown on Vimeo: the opinions aroused. The worst thing would anyone think differently and we all agreed. It is part of the game.
It is a wonderful work, very sensitive and even crazy, surreal. One of the best work I've seen.
I hope you do not criticize my English (it is thanks to Saint Google).

  • David Dutton plus 1 year ago
Thanks everyone for such a positive response. As far as the narration goes, I originally wrote this without narration, but later opted to throw it in to lighten the mood. I didn't want this to be a dark piece, but a tongue-n-cheek comedy, where we can laugh at our own binges that often lead to inspiration.

Plus my narration style is based off children story readings, or old 80's nature programs. I'm definitely influenced from "The Gods Must be Crazy" :)

David, I would take any negative commentary with a grain of salt. I have watched your other work here and I think this piece is absolutely wonderful. In fact, I would encourage you to do more. I will return to watch as will others.
Keep up the very good work my friend! :)

I can't believe I haven't added my congrats on the film...I wish vimeo could have lead me to more like this when I was browsing but I saw it and literally had to hunt it down to add a comment.
This movie makes me chuckle when I finally get the meaning...and in my mind somehow I've made my crazy interpretation of it all, but it wasnt till hours later, and it's funny to me.
David, bring out your 16-18 year old humor and check out my temporary video: vimeo.com/16990030 let me know what you think.
