Wilcox County, Alabama has one physician for every 4,667 people. For decades they have struggled to recruit doctors to the poverty stricken region. Hope for the future of their health care system is bleak with only one student in line to return to Wilcox.

A documentary by Carly Palmour and Caitlin Looney.

    That is just outstanding dedication.

BTW, isn't the WHO & UN minimum recommended medical coverage one doc for every 4000 people?
  • Carly Palmour 1 year ago
I do recall that statistic. Perhaps they should alter that number for rural areas?
These particular doctors serve not only as physicians, but also as dentists when needed. Not to mention they still have to tend to the emergency room.

It doesn't help that a lage percentage of their patients have no access to transportation. And all of this occuring while two of the doctors are on the verge of retirement! What a dilemma.

Great video...With all the nonsense on TV with tabloid news
reality TV,...This country should take note of the fine physicians in your video who dedicate their time and devotion to the people of Wilcox. These are the real people of America dealing with real issues. These are the people who should be seen on our news casts. People who do very meaningful things for ordinary people. Great job...

This was a really well-done documentary! I'm working on strengthening the focus of my films. By focus I mean main character or complication. What was your focus for A Certain Kind?
  • Carly Palmour 11 months ago
Our focus was the three doctors who take care of the whole county. We decided to make the film a character piece rather than a back-and-forth political argument about healthcare. People tend to shut off during those types of videos, so hopefully this served our purpose well.
I'd love to see some of your work!

I think you made the right choice! I'm editing a short film right now and so overwhelmed by the amount of choices and directions I can go. I guess that's why narrowing my focus is so important right now. Keep up the good work!

Carly, This video is GREAT!!! I work with an organization that's main focus is healthcare in rural areas.
It is really amazing how many area's suffer from this same problem. I am interested in using your video in some of my presentations. Would this be possible?
It really brings the point home in an emotional way to make people realize what we deal with sometimes in rural areas. I think people forget the most important things in life sometimes because they assume that everyone has access to healthcare and techonology, when in reality not everyone does. you may contact me by email at ecahec@yahoo.com Thanks again for the great work... by the way, some of your other videos are awesome too!!!

You can definitely use the video however you need! I just ask that no physical copies are made since we're still working on rights to the music. Thanks so much!

I very much enjoyed this video. I went to UA and I live in Birmingham but I'm having my wedding this year in Pine Apple, AL on an exotic breeding property. I sure do hope none of the animals decide to attack my guest!
  • Carly Palmour 7 months ago
Haha that's awesome! Pine Apple is a really great place. You should ride one of the exotic animals down the aisle or something.
