Trowel Development Foundation is a community-based organization that employs climate-adapted aquaculture technology to replant mangroves. The initiative also works to increase local incomes and improve livelihoods through a value-chain system to market tie-crabs. Mangrove reforestation efforts that focus on planting native tree species in strategic areas (and otherwise abandoned fish ponds) have resulted in restored marine biodiversity, increased local livelihoods, improved food security, and enhanced protection of coastal areas.
In 2010, Trowel Development Foundation won the Equator Prize which is awarded biennially to recognize outstanding community efforts to reduce poverty through the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. This video was created as part of our Biodiversity for Local Livelihoods project.
