Driving from Mikri Vigla to Halki, to Filoti, to the old Venetian tower of Bazeos, we always passed a fork in the road with a brown road-sign pointing across hilly contryside to an archaeological site in the region of Sangri. The site at Yiroulas contains the ruins of a temple to the harvest goddess Demeter, where Delian Apollo was also worshipped, and a small medieval orthodox chapel . The plain of Sangri has always been one of the breadbaskets of Naxos and the temple has stood there for some 2600 years, on a hill dominating the surrounding farmland.
