1. Ryan Singer at Future of Web Apps, London 2010
1 year ago
Here's a talk I gave at Future of Web Apps 2010 in London. In this talk, I walk through the steps of creating a web app including modeling, sketching, HTML, Photoshop explorations, and moving from static mockups to live running code. Each step is illustrated with a real example, including some live sketching and live HTML. I also wanted to give a sense of how we think about apps at 37signals, as a stack of different levels that we can iterate on individually.

Great presentation Ryan. Really straight-forward and very enligthening. I love designing in the browser already but looking at your workflow will help me streamline some of my current processes and improve others.

    Thank you. :)

Hey Ryan! Quick question: The light-on-dark application you're using to scribble up wireframes and ideas. What is it? Photoshop and a wacom?
  • kevinn 1 year ago
They have an app for the iPad named "Draft":
    37signals.com/draft

Yeah, you got it: Photoshop and a Wacom pen tablet.

This is brilliant. I'm a pretty bad designer (and only a slightly better programmer), but seeing how it's really done is great.

And the expression “halo of attention” is really helpful for me, because I think as a programmer, and the example you show of how a programmer would do it is exactly how I'd do it. :-)

    Thanks for sharing.

Great presentation Ryan! A co-worker and I are building our first Rails App (outside of work) and it's re-assuring to see we aren't toooo terribly off on our process. Picked up some great tips from this though! Thanks again!

Great presentation, great way of working. I guess the danger is when this process is done purely by programmers. Things end up looking generic.

This presentation is so simple and clear it has a 'zen' effect. Nice job!

I've watched this now for a second time and I absolutely love it -- I may have never had a chance to hear you talk in person @FOWA London so I can't thank you enough for sharing this with everyone. You guys are brilliant, keep up the good work!

Very similar to your presentation in Prague which I really enjoyed. Glad I can see it again this way, thank you very much for putting it here. Your presentations and way of work in 37 are actually my major inspiration for how to work in a future.

Awesome! That was the cleanest explanation I’ve seen about how to create a web app.
