Atheists are not that bad!

This is not an argument for atheism. It is a defense of atheists.

This video received the award for "Excellence in Humanist Communications" from the Harvard University Humanist Chaplaincy.

James Randi said this video was "very cool!"

Michael Shermer said it was "very impressive."

Penn & Teller said, "If a god existed, this video would make him wish he were dead."

Dan Barker (author of "Losing Faith in Faith") said it was "very creative and powerful" and that it "makes a GREAT point!"

Greg Epstein (the Humanist Chaplain of Harvard University) said "it's a wonderful video!"

Stephen Ulh (author of "Imagine No Superstition") said that this video was "just wonderful for the cause of atheism."

David Mills (author of "Atheist Universe") said "I am absolutely addicted to watching this fabulous video, which has almost instantly become a legend in the freethought community. Zak has created the most intellectually and emotionally powerful multimedia presentation I've ever seen endorsing the atheist position. This is a proud moment for all rational-minded people. Atheist books can have wide-reaching influence, but I strongly suspect that Zak's video will influence a much larger audience than any atheist book ever published. The first few times I watched this video, I literally had tears in my eyes by the end. The artistic talent and technical skills required to write and produce this video -- as well as its core message -- have made Zachary Kroger my newest freethought hero. I'm not surprised at the HUGE reaction Zak's video has generated."

This video (among others) was also mentioned in the November 4th New York Times article "God and Man on YouTube."

Nobelief.com said this was "the best video of 2006."

It currently is the 13th most discussed video of all time on YouTube.

What is the name of the song you used? Very good video by the way!

I understand that the name of the song is titled 'Is this the real thing'; coupled with the images of some of the most extraordinary minds who have advanced human comprehension in recent times, the music is a compelling draw card. The video is a welcome statement regarding atheists. I am left to express both my gratitude for and my commendation of this video.

I don't think I understand the point. You're showing pictures of people that aren't atheists in a defense of atheists?
  • Quantumor 1 year ago
    They are all atheists...
  • Zachary Kroger 11 months ago
Quantumor is correct. Though, it is possible I have made a mistake. If you think so, please feel free to correct me!

This is my first viewing of this and it is great, you did a wonderful job on it. One thing if I may, I have heard Neil deGrasse Tyson say how he doesn't like it when atheists co-opt his name as their own. I suppose he means he would rather be referred to as an agnostic. I get the point of the video to include both agnostics and atheists who do not have a belief in a god or gods, but the title is Atheist, so maybe the subtlety of not having a belief in god may be lost on some, who think only atheists are that way and do not even include agnostics, the term which to me is a cop out, but that is just me. If you have no belief in god then you are an atheist, but some make a distinction between agnostic and atheist. Maybe it should be called Atheist/Agnostic? Oh, and the stat about least American being atheist does it include agnostics? Thanks Zak for the video it was well done. very professional.

Aww, no Hitchens? You could've bumped Dave Matthews at least.
  • Zachary Kroger 11 months ago
When I made it, I didn't know about Hitchens. However, I tried not to include people who were mostly famous for their atheism. That is why I didn't include Sam Harris either.

Could be. But it had to match certain beats in the music. My advice: pause the video ;)

Carl Sagan denied being an atheist.
" "An atheist has to know a lot more than I know." In reply to a question in 1996 about his religious beliefs, Sagan answered, "I'm agnostic." Sagan maintained that the idea of a creator of the universe was difficult to prove or disprove and that the only conceivable scientific discovery that could challenge it would be an infinitely old universe." - Wikipedia

It depends what definition of atheism you use. If you define it as "someone who has no belief in gods" then they are all atheists, if you define it as "someone who beliefs there are no gods" then Sagan isn't one. But the first def is the most correct.

Oh, and simply because someone might be educated or might make a great discovery doesn't mean they're not a fool.
  • Geno Donatell 11 months ago
wow, well yea but as compared to the average narrow minded joe, i think these people are as far off from being fools as you can be... . . .

Anthony Hopkins is also an atheist i think.

Christopher Hitchens, James Cameron, George Carlin, Isaac Asimov, Kurt Vonnegut, Ron Reagan Jr., Randy Newman, Ernest Hemingway, Stephen Fry, Kathryn Hepburn, John Huston, Gene Roddenberry, H.P. Lovecraft, Steve Wozniak...yep, all complete fools who have brought nothing of value to humanity. Oh, the absurdity of blind belief in a book that is at its core is simply a millenium length game of Telephone.

Sagan is a scientist that I show so much respect and I realized you have started and ended your video with him. He has a unique love for life with it's miracles and about how life, started. In one of his interviews he says "it is scientist’s duty not to say something is true until he proves it" But this doesn't mean they don't believe it either. "To believe something because they say so" can be dangerous without filtering with your own mind.

Even being suspicious about God, is a need of human conscious. What I believe is this: The problem is in, where we are looking to see if there is god or not, "where is he and in what form if he exists etc.." And of course when we find most of the answers as nonsense, we may have a decision about he doesn't exist. Also you don't have a proof for he doesn't exist. For example feelings are something that you don't see but they are there isn't it?

Certainly I don't believe the god that is commonly taught us until 20th century (and may be still). God is something that strongly some people don’t prefer us to believe too. Also same people don’t prefer humans to think either! God is not changing than what was before but it is something that we (humans) couldn't name before and still. Science wasn't and still isn't enough to know more about it, but simply could you believe before that "time is relative" and can be different according to observers’ situations?(it is 5 minues for me but for you it's years.) "Can you ever think that even there may be a place exists that has no time at all? " Or with quantum mechanics law, don't the same scientists says that “everything (including universe) is made up of same thing and everything seems to be a holographic reflection of the whole" So how can one defers eactohter as humans, trees or stars. Some of them are proven some of are still in theory but certainly it goes somewhere else which goes well with my own belief.

Don't believe in "a god that other people describes" they are all different ideas and also don't reject as you don't find any good reason or evidence to believe. But collect all information you feel you can trust and bring your own imagination with an open heart to discover more everyday and yes be suspicious about what everything is proven also. For me this is the way of human believes to be pure. If you feel it, don't try to name it, if you don't feel, still you are good, don't force it or don't call people as believers or not believers.

I don't separate people as atheist or theist, nobody can blame people whether they believe or not cause I believe all is a part of the whole. There wouldn't be something right or wrong if we knew all the answers. It is just the ones's decision about what to believe, so I also show respect any idea which is suspicious but just prefer to own my own.

quite simply, unless someone has something concrete with which to back up a claim, i won't accept it as the truth.

no religious person has ever provided anything concrete for their claims about "god" in the history of humanity, therefore i don't accept or respect their claims any more than i would someone who claimed the universe exists in it's entirety inside the anus of an unimaginably huge pink unicorn being ridden by winnie the pooh.

the major problem i have is that there are a lot of these people and because they make claims that what they believe comes from the highest authority and they bow before this imaginary dictator every waking moment they end up attempting to force what they believe upon everyone else, believer or not. this is unacceptable, especially when it's being done through politics and laws are being passed which require children to be taught that these lies are in fact the truth and if they don't believe they'll be punished for eternity.

the people who push beliefs which are based in ABSOLUTELY NOTHING on people are despicable and i sincerely hope that as we evolve this kind of stupidity ends up where it belongs, in the past.

What if all those wonderful, intelligent people who contributed valuable, life giving substance to society (like art and science) totally missed the whole point of life? Missing the one thing that matters ... that would be foolish.
  • Dion Thorpe 4 months ago
I would be entirely unsurprised to learn that all the people you mention lived and live pursuing exactly what they believe to be the "point of life" – perhaps, in some cases, to contribute as much of that "valuable, life giving substance" to society as possible.

In the very original version of this video, I did. But EVERY comment was just debating Einstein's view on religion/god. It seemed nobody noticed the point of the video, and just focused on that.

As a result, I decided to remove him, with hopes that the point of the video would then be more apparent.
  • Azariel_z 2 months ago
This is all because some religious zealots bring up the "absence of heat means cold"... when Einstein was having fun at school debating with a teacher. Einstein wanted to make a point about why discussing Evil or God, if they are just creations form the human mind.
  • Zachary Kroger 2 months ago
That is actually an urban legend.
    snopes.com/religion/einstein.asp

The real reason is because Einstein often says things where "god" means the laws of the universe. For example, "I believe in Spinoza's God who reveals himself in the orderly harmony of what exists, not in a God who concerns himself with the fates and actions of human beings." As well as things like "The idea of a personal God is an anthropological concept which I am unable to take seriously."

So it's easy to use one quote or the other, and claim he was an atheist, deist, pantheist, etc.
