Produced by Morgan Spurlock, What Would Jesus Buy? is a satirical sideswipe at western culture’s new religion: shopping. From shopping malls to theme parks, every aspect of our lives is governed by what can be sold to us, whether we want it or not. But there is hope on the horizon. And his name is Reverend Billy.
Performance artist Bill Talen created his bleached-blonde ministerial alter ego in order to challenge people’s perception of the culture they have – literally – bought into. From the toy stores of New York and the largest shopping mall in the US, to the Disney empire’s vast landscape, Reverend Billy takes his choir of converts to adrress America's passion for consumerism, pleaing for moderation as Christmas approaches and incurring the wrath of shop owners, company executives and security guards everywhere.
Reverend Billy’s message is echoed through a series of hilarious exploits, underpinning his message that American culture – and modern society in general – is in a state of deep despair through its obsession with shopping.
