1. SKATEISTAN: TO LIVE AND S…
Skateistan: To Live And Skate Kabul is a beautifully shot film that
follows the lives of a group of young skateboarders in Afghanistan. Operating against the backdrop of war and bleak prospects, the Skateistan charity project is the world’s first co-educational skateboarding school, where a team of international volunteers work with girls and boys between the ages of 5 and 17, an age group largely untouched by other aid programmes.

Wow, really incredible. I can't tell if this is a reason for hope or just one more example of the sad state of affairs in Afghanistan. Maybe it's both.
  • amarie huber 10 months ago
    I think its both.
  • trusktr 2 months ago
Its both, but to see such an effort is so inspiring.

  • This is absolutely amazing. I'm not a fan of skateboarding in the least bit, but I am so glad to have watched this film. This is Oscar quality. It's painful and inspiring to watch. Thank you for sharing it.
  • Bijan Izadi 1 year ago
you cant not like skateboarding just because of all the stereotypes, its better than what you see. Most skaters, like me, like old rock songs and don't really like the new rap songs as much.
  • Who said anything about stereotypes? Only you. I just find the content of skateboarding...the concept...boring to watch, do, or be any part of. It has nothing to do with stereotypes, lol. Also, what part of my comment had anything to do with rock/rap music?
  • Lorhin 1 year ago
as much as i feel it sucks you think that about skateboarding, your entitled to an opinion. people dont realize that these days..its not for everyone, right?
  • Exactly. At least someone gets it. :)
  • 207 1 year ago
this video is about peace. nobody cares about your opinion. you dont like the concept of skating because youve probably never tried. and its people like you who bring others down when they are trying to be positive and be productive in place such as in this film. you obviously don't care about the kids much if you even have to bring that up. do yourself a favor and shutup
  • Read my comment again...you skewed something up...buddy.
  • SuNo 1 year ago
    Here's how it goes, man.
This video is slightly more about skateboarding as a means, than an end itself. Hence skateboard kids complaining. T, personally don't like it thaat much either.
But hey, everyone's has an opinion, neh? Let's all just better place it.. Or, watch the video again. Peacee..
  • I'm in the same boat. :) My point was, for somebody who is not interested in skateboarding, the video blew me away...it was a major compliment. :)

this is so funny. @matthewbrown.. i get you.. people are so quick to comment, they didn't even read your post properly.
  • hehe ;)
  • Kim Taylor 4 months ago
It just goes to show, you can call a video 'amazing', 'inspiring' and 'oscar quality', and people will still shoot you down for being negative. What more can you do?
  • All you can do is laugh. :) hehe.

This is amazing! Thumbs up for the idea and the amount of effort you put on making this! Greetings and strength from Argentina!

I'm so glad you were happily able to come out and say that despite having no interest in skating the message of peace, freedom and the awesome potential hidden inside every child from every nation on earth trancends the actual skateboarding in this film.

    Amazing!

The Filming, Grading, Editing, and Music is perfect.
I mean you can't go wrong with The Cinematic Orchestra.
At first I thought that this was all shot on an HDSLR and edited all by one single person, but I was still very happy to see that it was shot on film and involved many people.

I still don't understand the point of a Telecine except converting frames, why do you need two people to operate it?

One more gripe... The shot @ 2:44 suffers from MAJOR flickering issues. Either this was shot on a Digital Camera or something went wicked wrong during processing.

Any behind the scenes coming soon?
  • Grain Media plus 1 year ago
Hi Philip, thanks a lot for the kind words.

A telecine is the process to digitize film rushes so that you can then edit with them using a computer (rather than on a Steinbeck machine).

Yes, I'm well aware of the flashes... that's down to trying to shoot on film in Afghanistan.

There are some short behind the scenes films on our vimeo page if you're interested.
  • Philip Han 1 year ago
    I can't believe I didn't think about that...
The reason why I asked is because I always hear about people using the Telecine Process even though they shot Digitally. THAT is what confuses me. Unless you go Digital to Analog to Digital which makes no sense.
  • Irenie Beanie 1 year ago
honestly, when the story is so captivating, i personally couldn't care less about flickering and wouldn't have noticed it on the 100th viewing. beautiful job, really. i really appreciate that it was shot on film. i imagine it could have been a real easy choice to go digital, given the environment but something is lost that i can't explain in words. thanks for sharing your art!
  • Tom Maclachlan plus 1 year ago
I agree Irenie. The flickering is not a problem for 99% of the people who watch this film - we're too taken by the story to notice. (And even looking at it now it seems to be only a slight flicker.)
  • Philip Han 1 year ago
The story really was captivating and I enjoyed it very much. Seeing as this was shot on film and was superbly edited I don't think that I forgot to state how much I liked it.

I typed out the comment after I watched it for the third time so I was more concerned about the technical aspects of it.

Sorry for trying to provide constructive feedback and some questions...
  • Nezih Savaskan plus 1 year ago
Just to answer your question above Phillip...

As Grain said, Telecine is the process of scanning film frames into a Digital Format, grading and colour-correcting that as you go along and then playing the finished product out to digital tape, or a digital file, rather than printing it back onto film.

Although the telecine machine is technically just the scanner, the front end (i.e. the grading machine) something like a Spirit or a Davinci can grade from a source which is already digital too. So I am assuming that some people (being a bit old fashioned) may refer to the whole grade process as Telecine. Maybe?

Long winded answer I know, hopefully answers what you were getting at though!
  • Philip Han 1 year ago
Spirit doesn't make sense since it's not meant for grading.
DaVinci, I completely forgot about those amazing machines!

I just thought that it'd make sense to go the Digital Intermediate way but since it's only meant to be a digital video it just makes sense to go A>D

Thank you very much though! I'm obsessed with technicalities.
