Fantastic execution of a difficult topic. I'm really impressed at how you managed to ditch the Israel/Palestine cliches and still tell an interesting story.

Did you shoot this last winter? I was probably in Jerusalem around then.
  • Grant Slater pro 1 year ago
This was shot last spring from March to June as I wandered around the area.

This looks really good.. what software did you use to get the light spill effect and what did you use to color correct? Thanks.
  • Grant Slater pro 1 year ago
thank you much. the light spill effects are a lens flare i caught one day while filming and some film burns off a 16 mm camera. i just overlayed them in final cut and played with the opacity.

the color correction is magic bullet and the 3-way in FCP.

I really loved this! what a great idea as well as excellently executed! the only comment i would make would be in relation to stabilisation i.e. should mount/brace just to reduce jittering. Otherwise, really, really well done!

Where are the Palestinians? A split second of one or two faces amongst rubble from an Israeli attack. What a contrast to the clear water and overflowing market places of Israel in your video.
  • Grant Slater pro 1 year ago
    see pt. 2
  • I just watched part 2 and it doesn't seem like you answered this guys question. Part 2 is, just like part 1, a bunch of hipsters playing klezmer music in a cosmopolitan city with beaches, giant bubbles, silly string fights, and a "fun"-looking nightlife... interspersed with minimal shots of rubble; little kids kicking a dingy old soccer ball around a war zone. It's not that hard to guess which is which. Not really sure what your point is in making this--"We Are All One"? The stylistic layers and mood manipulation in this video would be well suited to a Gap commercial or an Apple commercial but given the subject matter I think they're profane.

An apartheid is an apartheid, and putting a human face on it; can only fool who doesn't know what kind of life is to be under the occupation, and in this case a colonial settler occupation.
It is not about "two sides", it is about an occupier and an occupied, and they are not equal in the crime, THE OCCUPATION.
Yes, we are all humans, including racists, criminals, nazis, and colonial settlers who want to evict the natives and seize the land inch by inch.
Mandala said: "The Palestinian state cannot be the by-product of the "Jewish state", just in order to keep the Jewish purity of Israel. Israel's racial discrimination is daily life of most Palestinians. Since Israel is a "Jewish state", Israeli Jews are able to accrue special rights which non-Jews cannot do. Palestinian Arabs have no place in a "Jewish state".
Apartheid is a crime against humanity. Israel has deprived millions of Palestinians of their liberty and property. It has perpetuated a system of gross racial discrimination and inequality. It has systematically incarcerated and tortured thousands of Palestinians, contrary to the rules of international law. It has, in particular, waged a war against a civilian population, in particular children." From a letter to Thomas Friedman.

I like the quality and workmanship of your video. But to couch the whole conflict as we are all good people, i am not sure i agree, and my sentiments fall to those on both sides, meaning, that i am not sure we are all good. However, i do agree with Kanan48, that you are really diluting the real issue with the video. In short, this is one group of people squashing another because they are in their way, and their religious beliefs only serve to enforce their divine right to deprive others of their basic rights because they are not 'chosen'. What is needed is a voice / video that is willing to deal with the truth. Unfortunately, that is not allowed in our conventional media outlets in the U.S. and we are really blind to the entire conflict because we would rather be spoon fed lies than have an honest dialogue about a horrible situation in Israel / Palestine. All of this might be more than what you are looking for in a response. I do think your workmanship is great, you are a real talent. I just don't agree with your premise, and it is somewhat of a distraction from the truth. Either way, thanks for sharing, it really is a well produced work.

    Hi Grant.

As I mentioned in an email, very humanistic approach. Great music, joyful moments; we can add our internal political commentary, according to whim and persuasion.
Technical question, if you're up to revealing trade secrets (I'm not the only one interested): What camera did you shoot with? Did you do anything special to get the colour saturation (frame rate / black levels)? Did you record sound with the camera mic or external mics?
    Thx,
    Chad
  • Grant Slater pro 1 year ago
    Hi Chad,

Thanks for your questions. This video was shot on the Canon 5dmkII and mostly on a steadicam because I was roving around the country a lot in crowded places or places where setting up a tripod was discouraged.

It was shot over three months, so there was really no unified effort to achieve a color saturation level. I tried my best to get a good exposure in different situations and then picked the best of that. There is color grading applied, especially in the concert shots.

For the music, I recorded it with a combination of a lavalier mic and a shotgun mic recording directly to the camera. I also set up some ambient mics and recorded to my laptop. You can see those mics on the chairs in the video.

    Thanks for watching!
  • Maria Santto 5 months ago
Hi! Looks great! I was just wondering if you care to share your experience with recording sound onto your 5dmk II. I've heard a lot of different opinions and some say those small shotgun mics are useless, like the Rode VideoMic Pro... I'd really appreciate some feedback, because I'm going to similar circumstances soon and need all the advice I can get! keep up the excellent work!

Really nice song and video. Perhaps the premise has flaws in it, but the sentiment and feeling are very uplifting.
I do imagine that most of the people in these conflicting areas are indeed, good people. We must have faith in each other and ourselves, anything that helps, helps.
Beautiful piece of work from start to finish.
    Thank you.
