A voters referendum five years ago determined that on October 10th, 2010 Bonaire would no longer be part of the Dutch Antilles. Instead it will join two smaller islands, Saba and St. Eustatius and become appointed municipalities of the Dutch Government. The larger Dutch Islands, Curacao and St. Maarten would gain more autonomy within the Netherlands Government structure by the consequent dissolution of the islands. Bonaire, Saba and St Eustatius would form the BES Islands and with Holland's assistance, modernize its education and immigration system, law enforcement and health care system. The over-all objective is to help improve the quality of life on these three islands.

The constitutional changes that took place on Bonaire was welcomed by an evening of speeches along with local song and dance at the main park in the center of Kralendijk.
