This Grizzly bear is eating soapberries on a river bar in Denali National Park. Bears this far from the coast don't have access to salmon, and eat about 80% vegetation, 15% carrion, and 5% their own kills.

The video was shot from a Tundra Wilderness Tour bus. These buses (maximum of 30 per day), and the shuttles run by the park service, are the only way to access the park interior since private vehicles are not allowed except scientists and professional photographers who have to get special access permits. The tour went 62 miles into the park.

Except for a 100 foot strip around the road, the core of the park is designated as wilderness, and no motor vehicles are allowed. The park service uses dog sleds in the winter to patrol the park since snowmobiles are not allowed, and they don't plow the road.

From the Weinstein family vacation to Alaska, August 2008.
