Heartwood was a poem written by my friend Jens Hieber and our latest visual poetry project. This time, I tried to do something different - stop motion! :)

It started with an idea of photos blending into moving pictures, then I wanted it scrunching up in time with the music before it would dance about the ground. It was later that I thought ah! stop motion could do this. Then when I did the music, there was the harp section where the image of scattering dried leaves just came to mind. So Glenn had an idea to use the blue screen for that.

Anyway, the result was... as posted :)

We had a lot of fun making this project - as you can probably see from the pics :) So I hope you enjoy watching it as well!

Hahaha :) thanks Maria :) Glad you liked it. We had so much fun doing this one - Glenn was very precise with the stop-motion, we lost count a couple of times and later we just said - stuff it, we just do extra shots hehe... I will let Glenn answer the HV20 question, that's his baby ;)

i just emailed him to interrogate him about the lens hehehehe lol yea this came out nice I see the lighting has changed there since it's Spring now? must be nice. Wish the season could reverse here & go to spring but we are heading for fall soon :-(
  • Lydia Kurnia 3 months ago
Yes it is soon to be Spring but it's still really cold down here :( I love fall though - that's my favourite season of the year! Although we call it Autumn here ;) You should do some shots of the falling leaves during this time of year - must be awesome! There, that can be your next project! :D

Oh I C he has an SG adapter, forget the blue screen I want the adapter lol
  • Lydia Kurnia 3 months ago
Hehe yeah that thing makes the camera look like a bazooka. People move away from him when he's filming :) It is the SGPro adaptor - it works wonders to your visuals! I love the filmic look it creates.

The bluescreen is just some blue material he bought cheap at a local craftshop haha... :p

hehe we call it autumn as well- but you aussies think 15 C is cold lol I will definitely do a fall project I actually like it when the trees get bare (I i will do it in the country) and I love fall- I just need to get me a SGPro lol

Hi Maria, yes it's an SGPro with a 100mm Nikon lens in the photo, but I've done the 'flip hack' to the camera too so I can flip the LCD upside down. More about that here - hv20.com/showthread.php?t=429 (Jerry Lee's posts, and other after it). Scary procedure. So the SGPro has been permanently attached to the HV20 since May.

By the way, the LCD hood is hand made too.. I posted a thread a while back about that too here - hv20.com/showthread.php?t=12606 It makes a HUGE difference in bright sunlight.

The shadows on the bluescreen were a bit of a problem though! Probably not the best idea but it's ok.

ahhh OK Thanks- I checked it out- EXPENSIVE lol the Letus seems less... but the SG really has a nice llok- I checked out the other videos - North HEad is Wow I have to come and see it for myself hahahah
  • Glenn (Avene) 3 months ago
Yeah, they're kind of pricey, especially once you add the Flip module. But yeah, the look, you can't beat it!

The Letus Extreme and Mini, along with a bunch of other brands of adapters such as the Brevis, RNG 35, Twoneil etc, are all vibrating adapters. So as a result you can't use high shutter speeds. I saw a clip a guy had done once using a Letus Mini with a high shutter speed, and it totally made a mess of things! The Letus Ultimate is a spinning adapter like the SG Pro so no problems with a higher shutter speed there either, but very expensive at around $5000. Judging by the look of all the videos I've seen shot on the Ultimate, I don't think the look is any better than the SG Pro. Redrock's M2 is another spinning adapter, but the SG Pro still has a nicer look. Mostly due to it's spinning ground glass.

ahhh I C I'm just learning about all this. It just seems silly to spend so much to get a look that actually only feels filmish, I mean it doesn't look like film (to me only film looks like film) but I still wouldn't mind having one and now it's good to know about the shutter speed. thanks for the details.

Love that! And Glenn using a tripod: yeppie!
Nice integration of the the bluescreen shots, well done.
Had to see it twice, once for the visuals, once for the words of Jens. Lydia, for your next poetry, try your voice :) see my tree... vimeo.com/1301538
    How did you get 00:33?
  • Lydia Kurnia 3 months ago
Thanks, Pierre, the blue screen was a lot of fun, so was the stop-motion stuff.

Haha is Glenn famous for his annoying shaky shots, is he? ;) This tripod comment has come up before :D

Ah I have tried my voice on Escape but that one didn't seem to hit it off hehe I think my voice was disruptive :D

Ooo I will check your tree stuff :)
  • Pierre 3 months ago
You must have a lot of friends with a great deep audiophonic voice to try it once more!
My idea is that I as a viewer, seeing two things at the same time is difficult, while beeing used to hear and see at the same time. You know the poem, I don't. But maybe it's just me. At least look for a good voice to give it a new try ;)
  • Lydia Kurnia 3 months ago
Hehe thanks for that - I know, it was a trial anyway :) I think that video had too much going on - I was trying too hard :D And no it wasn't just you :) oh and yes I will try again (now let me see if I can make Glenn's voice deeper... ;))
  • Glenn (Avene) 3 months ago
Hi Pierre, yes, I thought I'd dig out the old tripod for this one :) That old tripod is actually broken in two places.. Cheap plastic rubbish (Never again will I buy a Velbon tripod) But thankfully I've managed to screw the pieces back together again.
  • Pierre 3 months ago
The Velbon DV-7000 is OK. I use Libec :)
