23. Panasonic AG-AF100 test II

New video filmed on Panasonic AG-AF100 (last release), mixed with Canon 5D MK II BTS footage.
NO GRADING!

The new Panny is terrific:

no aliasing, no moiré, the rolling shutter is present but minimum, great resolution.
The release in my hands, is not the definitive one and there are some bugs in the menu (the variable frame rate doesn't work, for example) but I'm in love with this baby.

A very special thanks to:

Pietro Bianchi for the BTS footage
Valerio Barbati for the precious help
Gordon de Adamich from Centro Internaziole Guida Sicura (VARANO DE' MELEGARI - ITALY).

I used Nanoflash at 280Mbps
Lenses: Canon 70-200 2.8 and Nikon 14-24 2.8

Music: Jamiroquai / "Everyday" from "Travelling Without Moving" album.

THANKS FOR WATCHING AND STAY TUNED!

The AG-AF100 footage looks beautiful! I'd be curious how it's low light capabilities compare to the 5D or the 1D MarkIV?

Terrific! Filippo, is this nanoflash or AVCHD?

    Nanoflash!

how much perceivable difference did you see between nano and the internal codec? Get to test it?

    Kalani-

Great looking images btw : )
  • Filippo Chiesa plus 1 year ago
AVCHD codec is not good as the Nanoflash one but you can use it, it's not so bad!.
In my opinion, for a professional use, an external recorder is required!

Footage looks stunning. Is there a reason why the 5d is as over exposed as it is?
  • Filippo Chiesa plus 1 year ago
    Thanks Lakeeba!
In my opinion, the 5D footage is not over exposed except when the car goes away!

  • Great test. Have you tested the AVCHD codec off of the SD Cards? Is there much difference between that and the Nano Flash? What Bit Rate did you record at on the NF?
    Thanks for sharing.
  • Filippo Chiesa plus 1 year ago
    Thanks NZ Greenroom Productions!

I have looked at both types of the encoded footage, the Nanoflash one is much more better (280Mbps), but the Panny one works very well!

    Molto grazie, Filippo,

am absolutely stunned about what comes in from this camera at the price it has. I believe this will change a lot in the business and the semi-pro world. And it will be a lot of fun with such a small and versatile tool.

Filippo, Great job, many thanks for going to the trouble of testing this highly anticipated camera.

One thing I noticed is on some clips of the AF100 the highlights look clamped about 86% brightness, was this in camera using a 'Cine Like / DRS' preset or adjusted in post?

Look forward to your next installment.
    All the best James.
  • Filippo Chiesa plus 1 year ago
    Thanks James!
I used a Cine like preset and I have changed the pedestal of the camera a little bit.

HAi usato schede SDXC?
  • Filippo Chiesa plus 1 year ago
    Ciao Domenico,

  • domenico bandiera plus 1 year ago

    thanks,
You need an adaptor: Canon EF to Micro 4/3.

AF100 looks fantastic and thanks for using MkII for BTS, it's great to compare the two.

Great idea to use the car mount!!!
The AF100 gets the checkered flag, si?

Great video, the Mito is very pretty. Moiré is very noticeable at 0:21, but overall the Canon is not that bad in comparison. On the other hand, the Panasonic is only twice more expensive, and the rolling shutter effects are indeed minimal.
  • Filippo Chiesa plus 1 year ago
    Michael, thanks for your comments!

Ciao Filippo!
    graz
  • Filippo Chiesa plus 1 year ago
    Ciao Marzio,

    Saluti!
  •
  • Arancia Idraulica plus 1 year ago
    Ottimo, Filippo!

L'immagine è robusta, dettagliata, adatta a lavori decisamente raffinati.

    Ciao, continua a deliziarci!
  • Filippo Chiesa plus 1 year ago
    Ciao arancia idraulica,

  • Hi Filippo- thanks for the update.

The Canon is an EF/EOS lens on the M4/3 adapter?
If so, how are you controlling iris?

    Grazie!
  • Filippo Chiesa plus 1 year ago
No iris control, only wide open for EF lenses!
  • That's what I thought. So how did you control the exposure? ISO? Shutter? I have EF lenses, so I'm VERY curious! Thanks Filippo!
  • Filippo Chiesa plus 1 year ago
Chuck, you can use on board ND filters but there is another procedure (I don't like it because it's "long"!): you gotta put the lens in a Canon body, lock the iris than unlock the lens and put it in another camera (like the AF-100) without iris control!
Sorry for my bad English! ;-)
  •
  • HDEyes plus 1 year ago
Nessuna info aggiuntiva sul mio precedente commento? Grazie comunque
  • Filippo Chiesa plus 1 year ago
Sorry, nella confusione ti avevo saltato! ^_^

This a great little camera, but you really have to be able to fork out an extra $3000 or so to record to a Nano Flash or similar to get a decent bit rate. 280Mb/s is always going to look better than 24Mb/s!
  • Filippo Chiesa plus 1 year ago
The AVCHD codec is not good like the Nanoflash one but it's not so bad.
First you can buy the camera and when you will have an important work to do you'll can buy an external recorder like the Nano!

Nice footage and we've included it on the blog at blog.planet5d.com - however, I'm disappointed that you didn't film identical scenes (with the cameras side by side)... comparing scenes with different lighting and subjects is a bit tough.
  • Filippo Chiesa plus 1 year ago
    Hi planetMitch,

    thanks for watching and sharing!
Sorry, but I haven't had enough time to compare the cameras.
I will test the AG-AF100 again on November in Japan so stay tuned!

use canon FD with the toothpick trick. (to make the iris work) or a lockable FD lens maybe or even an old fl lens
