08.24.08 || Joanna + Teddy || A sunday SDE

You wouldn't know it from watching, but during Joanna and Teddy's wedding the sky's were heavily saturated by a torrential downpour of epic proportions. However, this rainy day SDE was a complete pleasure to make because despite all the so called *bad" weather, Joanna and Teddy stuck it out with the biggest and most heartwarming smiles, laughter, and love. You can see from their expressions that no matter what the weather brings, these two only see each other in perfect light.

Those poor doves had to fly home in the rain! This is wonderful work. This is a Same Day Edit? Even more impressive. The steadicam is amazing and favorite shots are the rings in the water. There seemed to be alot of grain or noise but I assume there was really low light? Truly top notch.
  • Hey, thanks for the excellent comments on the film! Yes, those doves had to fly home in the rain...however, the dove lady (or wrangler, not to sure what she would technically be called) told everyone that the doves don't actually mind the rain at all. She also said that they are trained to arrive at her house later that night....crazy, eh?

ahhh...the grain....yup...those darn HVX200's cant handle low light very well. But we did use a Sony EX1 which handles low light like a charm, however, the dancing ballroom area had basically no light at all and we had to bump up the brightness in FCP a bunch to even make things visible.

    Thanks for awesome compliments,

    Cheers,

    Casey Warren

Great work Casey. A real pleasure to watch. Loved the ring shots as well. The sequence of shots at about 2:23 were beautiful.
  • Matt,

    Thank you!

The ring shot was a total blast to shoot! Danielle and I had a great time coming up with ideas for where to put them, etc...and we thought..."Ohhhh the Ocean...." which in the end provided some pretty cool overcrank wave shots....however, right after we did that main ring shot Danielle bent over to adjust the rings and my iPhone slipped out of her pocket and fell onto the rocks....only to be totally obliterated by a wave seconds later....

Good news is that it survived and is still semi-operational... :) It was all worth it for the ring shot though!!

    Cheers,

Oh man .... I got an iPhone last week so I can feel your pain :( I destroyed a camera getting this shot - vimeo.com/1325720 - the lengths we'll go to hey :)
  • Haha, I checked out that video when you first posed it.....CRAZY....did you have that cam insured? Eventhough it destroyed the camera the footage is totally awesome.

Yep, the cam is insured. Still waiting to sort it all out though - it's been well over a month :(

  • You really have a good instinct for movement and framing. Great work.

    Casey,
Truly respectable camera work, especially for wedding cinematography, where everyone and their mother claim to have experience. Your work is intimate, personal, and aesthetic. Although I must admit, when the waves came in on that set of rings, I was very nervous they would be swept away.

Oh--and you use the redrock micro! Great little piece of equipment. Were you actually using the lens adapter while shooting this wedding?

    Once again, gorgeous work.
  • Lol, yes the ring shot got a lot of "ooohhhhhhh"'s in anticipation when we showed it at the wedding. I think they were thinking the same thing.

In reality the rings were really secure, Danielle was standing on the left side just out of frame with her hands open incase a larger than normal wave came by and swept them away. Also, the slow-motion helps the waves look a bit bigger than they were...We originally were filming in 24p and then reviewed the footage and we laughed because the wave was so dinky.

We use the Redrock quite a bit, most of the ceremony footage was shot with both the Redrock and Letus.

    I appreciate your compliments.

this is really good stuff Casey!! Your work truly inspires me as I'm filming my first wedding this july, quite nervous about it! But when i see your work, I feel pumped to try my best and get creative. What is the song to this piece? It's really good.
