Very creative and nicely done. Those were some nice After Effects skills. Thanks for sharing!

That's great. I love it.. except the constant wobble that just gets on my nerves. Without that it'd be perfect.

I dig the wobble too; it adds a freshness and a filmic, organic effect to a genre of motion graphic that often goes stale.

I really enjoyed that a lot! Very well done and creative. Great use of type.

    BUT
and Im saying this in a constructive fashion:

fix your mistakes! You have lots of masks that clip the letters and its painfully obvious especially in HD. Also for the cake scene when the you rotate around it you should really take an extra moment and vector that image to avoid that ugly pixelization.

This is a really amazing piece and I would love to see that extra bit.

I wish I could be as glowing as the rest of the reviews. I enjoy the song, but this animation wasn't much more than animated text, and camera effect tricks in After Effects. (And it was indeed AE; I can recognize the motion blur, depth of field and spot lighting on the stage/canvas a mile away.) I don't consider this "animated typography" or design at all. There appeared to be very little thought about the alignment and placement of text elements, no consideration for spacing, kerning, size, proximity; basically all first-year design tenets. (You had the "Contrast", and some poorly planned "Repetition", but without the "Alignment" and "Proximity", the design is still "CRAP") As an exercise in After Effects skills, it's not a bad piece. You obviously grasp the camera and 3D modes in AE. I thought you could do more with lighting, Z-axis transformations, shadows. You need to work on better masking, better timing, and just basic design. My opinion is that with the popularity of animated typography and motion design, most people are happy to see this kind of thing, especially with such a popular piece of gamer/geek pop culture, but I certainly think this could be done better. Another thing I thought was annoying is the use of the low-res imagery of the cake around the 1-minute mark. You could have just as easily made a vector version of that artwork. I'm not complaining about the blur, it's the obvious jaggies on that artwork. Stylistically, there wasn't anything remarkable. I thought the fire was a cheap effect. It would have been kind of cool if you had managed to do some fire animations as vector, or even in high-contrast black and white. The animations and speed of animations are inconsistent, and rely too heavily on motion blur. Here's an example of what I would consider very good animated typography: youtube.com/watch?v=WXxouXt5dz4 (Lots of style, great use of color, other imagery, consistent animation style, timing, etc.)

This is the kind of guy who complained on 2 dozen blogs about how the teaser trailer for "Watchmen" used one of the B-side Smashing Pumpkins Batman tribute tracks for another comic movies trailer. The kind of guy who couldn't just let go and experience it for what it was and feel it.

Really. (Parse what I just said...)

It's tough to not be able to enjoy shit for what it is.

    Pity, dude. Pity.

I'm glad I can just enjoy written/visual/musical expression for what it is, and not feel compelled to triumph and trumpet my (as yet unshown) experience in an anonymous forum (you have no videos, btw).

The cake is a lie, but the pumpkin pie the truth all the way...!

    Happy Canadian Thanksgiving!

You've got points, but you're longwinded. You enjoy criticizing, don't you? You seem okay at it, but you also seem like you're no fun.

Talk less, enjoy more, as the saying goes. Or listen.

  • Marc Ebuna 1 year ago
Great intentions, ditto on Boober Woob, though. Constructive criticisms. I would have said it myself when I was forwarded this video a couple days ago, but I didn't want to seem like an a**hole, because most lay people don't seem to understand that there are certain design standards within each art.

My contributions: I enjoyed the graphic style, but felt there were a few things that were graphically inconsistent. In particular, you were using a very iconographic style throughout and then suddenly used realistic fire. This could be great - if you have some time, consult a design friend for help and make it so! ^_^

I really honestly agree to the criticism. It wasn't an actual typography because, honest to god I have no idea on the subject. Anything I learned was from watching other videos. No class, or book, nothing. To me it was just a test because I had just picked up After Effects and wanted to learn as much as I could about it. Best way was just a simple trial and error. I don't have any stock footage to mess with so I made this...

Fun Fact: The "Your" comes from finishing at 4 am and after realizing your mistake after a 2 hour render for the 3rd time. Laziness overwhelms the mind.
  • Ray Anderson 1 year ago
Good response. Shame the negative criticism didn't point out that you have a real feel for this sort of thing, which can't be taught in MFA programs, FUN FACT: Your talented.

It's a decent effort for a first go. You learned things and we get to watch something that's not totally horrible.

Is the camera shake/wobble an expression or did you just key it through the whole thing?

You should vectorize some of those icons, or at least the one of the cake at 00:52 so you don't get those nasty blurry pixels when you zoom in.

Gotta love it! I like it :)

Are the objects supposed to be pixellated though? I noticed it in the video and then saw Craig's comment... At first it looked unintentional, but when I watched it again I almost thought it was a nice artistic effect... perhaps making the pixels more intentional-looking would make it perfect!
