Looks great for raw footage...I think I'll stick with my 5D Mark II because of the AF100's price tag though!

it's worth it with a more stable image.

I've been listening to this track (and the whole score, really) a lot lately; great choice! The footage looks terrific and is really selling me on this one. I've been waiting for Panasonic to step it up and it looks like they're bringing their "A-game" with this camera. Nice work, Philip!

Nice stuff, captures the 'South' very well! Good camera, very similar in image quality to the hacked GH1 (I think) but so much extra that makes it worth the extra money for certain people. I personally am sticking with DSLRs but the XLR jacks, slow motion and cropping for 2.35:1 on screen are good.

EVF is not final I hear.

Did you miss the dynamic range of your 5D Mark II or was it pretty good with highlights and shadow detail?
  • Philip Bloom pro 1 year ago
that's good news about the EVF. I will amend that.

I really have no clue what the DR is of this camera. Too many variables that i don't know in the menu to get the best image...something to find out over the next two months
  • Andrew Reid plus 1 year ago
Cool. It looks good though - that's what matters. For future reference GH1 was about 9.5 stops and GH2 is 10.5. 35mm film is 15.

Don't like too much HDR. I like contrasty light and dark shadows. Like you get in Manchester before being murdered by a chav.

u mentioned the lowest iso being 200. is this because of the new sensor, or do you think that the gf1 can be shot at 200 instead of 100 with absolutley no noise difference when shooting video?

i really know so little about the tech aspects of the camera. When I go see the factory i will find out a lot more

    I believe the AF100 has a native 60P setting!
  • Philip Bloom pro 1 year ago
    couldn't find a 1080p 60p in menu, just 720p 60p
  • Mario Rodriguez 1 year ago
Then the slow motion was done in 720P?

Thanks for the hard work, Philip! You live and work for us - your community! I'm appreciate what you do very much! Thanks! The Panni is defenitly a runner for me, but can you explane the little softness of your testshots? is it the AVCHD codec or problems with focusing? I would have expected a little sharper shots of the camera.
  • Philip Bloom pro 1 year ago
i had the sharpness turned down to -7...that is what the camera was given to me as...i had so little time to fiddle with it and it sounded about right. When I get the camera in two weeks i will try different sharpness settings...

id love to see some more hand held shots (without an image stabilizing lens) comparison with dslr shots. i would stick with my dslr's as the price tag is huge, panasonic have opened a new window for camcorders, cant wait to see what Sony and canon come out with. thanks for the review.
PS would be nice to download some raw footage to play with.

  •
  • Great work! Outstanding job Phil! I can't put my finger on what it is exactly, the quality of the footage is great but, I still prefer something look-wise from the DSLR's. Not sure if that makes sense. Thanks for getting this shot and cut so fast!
  • Nino Leitner plus 1 year ago
I had the exact same thought.

I agree, very impressive images from a broadcast camcorder, but it looks more like a mixture of DSLR-type footage and what we are used to from Panny's HVX-/HPX-type camcorders (which isn't bad either - but different).

I expected that, and part of it might be because of AVCHD bitrate - I'm looking forward to the Nanoflash shots as GH1 footage also benefitted massively from the higher bitrate with the firmware hack.

Outstanding Philip, I know how tough it is to write such a review and shoot and edit a piece like that in such a tiny time slot - went through the same experience with my pre-production T2i/550D test short "February". And now PLEASE relax a bit and unwrap your XBox Games :)

  • ANDREW WEHDE plus 1 year ago
all the tele stuff looked great, my concern was the first few shots that i assume were shot on the pani 7-14mm.. You could really see the image stretch with the pan movements. Was this something that you noticed a lot with the wide lenses. Did you find the 2x crop a real pain in the arse? I know you touched on this a little in your blog, would love to hear more. I am afraid the 2x crop is going to be a big factor...
  • Philip Bloom pro 1 year ago
on a wide lens like this at 7mm (14mm 35mm equivalent) moving the shot will give you distortion. If I had zoomed in more would have been less...2x crop is a pain on the wide end for sure.

Looks great Philip! Might try and sell the EX1 while I still can. Based on what you saw with the pre-production model, do you think it could replace an EX1/EX3? Obviously they have different markets, but at this point I was only using the EX1 for wides really and 5D's for everything else.
  • Daniel Apollon plus 1 year ago
yes I think it can replace the EX1, which I had and did not like its Sony washed out colors. I also think the AF100 will be so much sharper than my 5D Mark II for shooting wide landscapes. My experience is that shooting far details at f/5.6-f/8 with the Canon USM S L 24-105mm is resolving much less detail than shooting the same details with my hacked GH1 and the Panasonic Lumix 14-45mm zoom at the same iris value. So I expect the AF100 to be one more hack better for wide landscape shots with very little aliasing on far tiny details due to a better OPF. I begin to dislike more and more the aliasing from my 5D MkII. It has ruined so many decent shots and I do not want to spend the rest of my life, shooting absurdish 1 cm shallow xcus. I have therefore reasonably great expectancies from the AF100 release. I also expect Panny to release some fully fast fast aperture zoom f/2.0-2.8 minimum in the 14-145mm range. What I will miss is the dial inn digital rack focus of Sony EX1 EX3.

Wonderful as always Phillip! Looking forward to seeing how this camera impacts the HDSLR market, it seems like Panasonic could really steal the market from Canon, unless Canon has some secret weapon they have yet to say anything about.
  •
  • joe santarromana plus 1 year ago
Something seems different in how you're shooting with the AF101 than when you shoot with HDSLR's. It feels less from the hip with the AF101 less immediate but with strong intention. Like when someone who shoots 35mm still photography moves on to a medium or large format camera.

  • Bass Pig 1 year ago
Overall, not bad looking footage, except for some CA on a few scenes and blown highlights at 1:18.. looks like about 80-10 f-stops of DR to me. Needs a lot of help in post to make images really luscious, if this is the neutral raw footage. The fish DoF footage at :41 looks to be shot with a fairly long lens. What focal length was that shot at? Certainly, this may attract some of the DSLR crowd, depending on how good its audio capabilities are, but I'm not excited about the color from any of the single imager cameras I've seen, including RED.
