There are currently 150 operating manure digesters at live-stock facilities across the U.S., with potential for 3,000 to 4,000 additional digesters. However, many policy and financial barriers stand in the way of farms installing their own digester. Manure digester projects provide both environmental and economic possibilities, including greenhouse gas reduction; renewable energy generation; reduction of air, land and water concerns; and revenue diversification for producers and rural communities. Christopher Voell discusses the opportunities and hurdles to manure digester project implementation. Voell works in the U.S. and abroad with producers, project developers, utilities and government agencies to advance the development of renewable biogas.
