For one special night only, the 1929 classic British silent film Piccadilly will be screened with an evocative improvised score performed live by one of Europe’s most acclaimed concert and film accordionists - Igor Outkine.

The Ivy House, Nunhead will be the venue for this unmissable, one-off event, set to recreate the enchanting atmosphere of the silent cinema era and the dazzling style of 1920’s Jazz Age London nightlife.

Hailed as “one of the truly great films of the silent era” (Martin Scorsese), E. A. Dupont’s Piccadilly is a sumptuous showbusiness melodrama seething with sexual and racial tension, starring one of the most alluring and controversial screen goddesses of the 1920s - Chinese-American actress Anna May Wong.

Anna May Wong’s character Shosho is plucked from obscurity as a lowly scullery maid working at one of Soho’s fashionable nightclubs. Her sensual, exotic performances go on to make her the toast of the town, inspiring fatal passions and jealous obsessions.

This thoroughly modern film sets up a powerful London drama between West End and East End as it explores the entertainment obsessed indulgences of the rich and the poverty stricken plight of London’s Limehouse communities.

Piccadilly’s seductive visual landscape will be brought to life by the virtuoso live performance of acclaimed accordionist Igor Outkine, renowned for his stirring and emotional performances on stage (Almeida Theatre, Royal Festival Hall, Shepherd’s Bush Empire, Edinburgh Festival) and screen (David Cronenberg’s Eastern Promises; Edith Piaf bio-pic La Vie en Rose). With “an accordion as brilliant as a band”, his musical repertoire travels with warmth, humour and breathtaking versatility through Classical, Jazz, Latin, Russian and Gypsy music, enthralling audiences and critics throughout Britain and Europe.

This is the first special silent film event organised by the Brockley Jack Film Club, one of South East London’s most successful member-led film clubs.
