this is a nice coincidence - if you fit a circle into each ring at it's widest point you'll get the same effect as in my "recursive circulation" applet. that's initially how i conceptualized the process - in terms of concentric circles aligning/misaligning themselves, rather than separate circles chasing/avoiding each other.
