I really like your macro shots - so clear

Yeah, great macro shots. I've never seen aphids look so big. The always seem pretty much green dots to me. Maybe they grow bigger in America aswell though.
  • Ian Lucero 2 years ago
Yeah these aphids are pretty huge to me. They are usually pretty small. Since we both just moved to Oregon, South of Seattle, Washington, we have a whole bunch of new bugs to discover and learn about.

Many, many, many years ago, I'd watch ladybugs eat aphids off of our rose bushes.
  • Ian Lucero 2 years ago
Ladybugs are great for cleaning up your garden from aphids the natural way. Or you could squish'm. BUt yeah ladybugs are amazing at helping out with gardening.

ladybugs are pretty amazing. they help me with my garden too.

In Britain, ladybugs are called ladybirds. Just thought you might be interested.
  • dalas verdugo staff 2 years ago
I would think "ladybird" would be kind of redundant in Britian.

    Haha!

Yeah Buck Flashroy, like everything here in 'Merica, we likes to grow our Aphids BIG! The bigger the better. My Aphids drive Hummers.
  • Ian Lucero 2 years ago
    Mine drives a golf cart!

    That looks like a Hummer.

I had to throw away a room full of plants because of an aphid infestation.
  • Ian Lucero 2 years ago
Did they completely ruin your plants or was it just to overwhelming to doing anything about it? That sucks. Maybe next time you could just buy a whole bunch of lady bugs and unleash them in the room. They'd go to town on those aphids. But then you're left witha room full of lady bugs, which could be cute but annoying when you are trying to sleep.

You can spray them with soapy water to kill them. Aphids are pretty horrible here, they messed up a lot of our plants and were all over our trees.

Worst of all is the spiders though. They are coming out now.
  • Ian Lucero 2 years ago
Kamala tried soapy water before at the old place and that sorta worked. But they come back. I guess either way they're gonna come back. Ladybugs. If you were to introduce them to your garden (meaning you went and bought a few hundred and set them free) i wonder how many would stick around. Or would they be like, "Screw this guy man, he just paid how much for our freedom? Sucker! I'm outta here." And if they did stick around, would they keep stickin' around after they ate all the aphids? We don't have a greenhouse so there isn't a way to contain the ladybirds. We'll just have to try it out.
  • Ian Lucero 2 years ago
Also what do you mean with the spiders. What do the spiders do? Or do you mean Spider-mites? Spider Mites suck.
  • SteveR 2 years ago
I like how towards the end of your long paragraph above you inadvertantley use the word ladybirds instead of ladybugs. You are gradually turning English.
  • dalas verdugo staff 2 years ago
The spiders hang around all over and are scary. Theoretically they can bite you, but I've only been bitten once or twice. They seriously put their webs EVERYWHERE.
  • duplo 2 years ago
    How much do ladybugs cost?

I'd pay extra for ladybirds if they came with cute accents.
  • Ian Lucero 2 years ago
@ SteveR - shall we have tea? ;P

@ dalas - We have spiders hanging out all over our car. I like spiders. Kamala doesn't as much as me. Just as long as they don't bother us at night.

@ duplo - at this one online store you can get 1,500 of em for like $6 or 72,000 for about $70. Not bad, I think. Not sure about the cute accents.

@ the aphids - look out! we're gonna gitcha!
  • dalas verdugo staff 2 years ago
At night is when they drop down onto your face. Seriously, they have done that to us several times.
  • Ian Lucero 2 years ago
that gives me an idea for a series...

Oh, those placid bovine creatures, waiting for the ants to come and milk them . .
