A year's compilation of my time lapse work. All shot on the Canon 5D2 and processed in Adobe After Effects. The majority of the shots are in my beautiful home state of Arizona. Goblin Valley State Park and Natural Bridges National Monument in Utah also make an appearance.

Every clip is a RAW image sequence (5616 x 3744) that I rendered out as a 1080P 23.976fps Quick Time movie. The motion control is achieved using servo motors.

Incredible work, very inspiring! How did you light some of the foreground objects like the train and the nasa vehicle? Also, concerning the shot at 1:45, can you tell me the exposure settings there? Thanks!
  • Dustin Farrell plus 1 year ago
I light with Lite Panels, the Lux light by Bebob, and cheap Coleman LED lanterns. I cannot recall the exposure settings on that shot. Doesn't really matter though because I usually shoot night shots underexposed and "stack" clips in After Effects using the "Screen" blend mode. My little secret. Now everybody's.

    =) thanks for sharing!!!

That is a good method to reduce noise. Although, based on what the screen blend mode actually does (black is fully transparent, white is opaque, anything in between is semi-transparent) it can be a bit unforgiving in the shadows depending on how well that area was exposed originally. This can lead to some very deep and almost crushed blacks, which may or may not be what the photographer wants for the particular shot. Just thought those who want to try this should know that.

Really good trick thanks for sharing Dustin. I used to prosses all my shots in lightroom first, takes hours on my little laptop.
    Beautiful footage!
  • You could do the blend trick in just about any editor that does transparency, right? I'm on a PC using Pinnacle 14. I do a lot of star shots and I like the stacking idea, would have made my "ships at night" shots a little stronger in this one: vimeo.com/13794271

  • Amazing! What servo motors are you using?
  • Dustin Farrell plus 1 year ago
servocity.com The 1 rpm and 2 rpm geared motors. Call Kyle and tell him to give me some commission! :)
  • Thanks.

I am thinking of getting Kessler Crane's solutions, as they can be used for multiple purposes (Dolly, Slider, Crane, Tripod).

Would love to learn more from you in terms of how to set the camera exposures...
  •
  • Also, here's a suggestion to your workflow: instead of using Quicktime, directly import your RAW files as a RAW sequence in After Effects (CS5, 64-bit). With the first file in the sequence you can change the RAW settings (Camera RAW opens) and then still have tons of ways to manipulate further in AE as the composition opens in 32-bit float color space.
  • Dustin Farrell plus 1 year ago
Guess you misunderstood and I underexplained :) That is my workflow exactly. Without manipulating the RAWS in ACR some of these shots would be impossible. The FINAL clips are rendered out as QT. RAW is beautiful.
  • Okay, great! You understand the power of AE. I just often see people transcoding first to quicktime (with loss of quality) before doing further compositing/editing. That's a waste of colour data.

Instead of doing timelapses (stills), have you ever considered doing HDR video? Feel free to join this group on Vimeo: vimeo.com/groups/hdrvideo
  • Dustin Farrell plus 1 year ago
HDR video fascinates me as much as timelapse. I got into HDR timelapse because of my desire to reproduce the dynamic range of the human eye in a video clip. RED's HDRx technology is very exciting. 2:53 is my best HDR example because that is the way I viewed the scene in person.
  • Again, your stuff looks a-ma-zing!

At 2:52 that's still a timelapse, right? Not an actual HDR video recording... or is it?

WOW! Stellar stuff Dustin. One quesiton- how do you shoot the bracketed shots on a timelapse, is there a cool remote that does that? Thanks so much for sharing.
    Tom
  • Dustin Farrell plus 1 year ago
Just the Canon TC-80N3 remote controller. With the camera in rapid fire mode, set the 'long' menu to 2 or 3 seconds. This will tell the remote to hold down the shutter button taking rapid pictures up to your bracket amount. Set an interval that will allow the camera time to write the raws to the card and the camera will repeat this for the next bracket burst.

  •
  • I'm curious about the intervalometer you used. Also, you say you underexposed many of the shots. I know the noise levels on the 5D are known to be quite low at reasonably high ISOs. But, dang, dude. . . on some of these shots, you must be shooting 30 sec. exposures at ISO 6400. Amazing! The equal of anything I've seen on Vimeo or anywhere else. Or better!

So, I just tried importing a Raw sequence in AE, made a composition and exported a 422HQ quicktime. The estimated export time is 35 minutes. With a jpeg sequence it only like 5 minutes. Plus, I only get a 1 frame preview with AE not being able to see any of the footage in real time. I guess I could ram preview it but that would probably take 35minutes also. I'm curious if there is a better way to handle the raw footage in a way that makes it more manageable? Before my work flow was, adjust to ACR, export Jpegs, Import into AE and then export movie. Got any tips on making this work a little better? I love your stuff and would love to figure out the best AE work flow! :O)
  • Matty2x4 1 year ago
Have you tried export as tiffs? they are still good quality closer to RAWS than jpegs. I use tiffs they work fine, but dont use LZW or ZIP on them, it will slow you down.

Your timelapse shots are outstanding and exceptionally beautiful. The usage of dolly to create paralax and perceived depth in the image works very well to create an interesting shot. And your lighting and choice of locations, times, and foreground objects to feature are amazing.

However, I really think that the usage of sporadic crossfades in the edit comes across as awkward, and as a viewer, it distracts from the experience of perceiving your images. I'm not sure if it is the inelegant fade interpolation, or the way that the two images combine when partially faded, or just the randomness with which the technique is made use of, but I would seriously reconsider this editing strategy.

Inspiring work, thank you for sharing.
  • Dustin Farrell plus 1 year ago
Point taken. Many times the cuts were VERY jarring. Too much so IMO. And after the Vimeo encode some of the dissolves became choppy. Download the video and play it directly from your computer. Much better.
