To be visited during the Dutch Design Week, October 23 - 31.
In full he is called Melvin the Magical Mixed Media Machine, but he also listen to the short version Melvin the Machine. And to make it even more difficult he is also a Rube Goldberg or, if you like, a Pitagora Suicchi. As long as you picture yourself a machine that is deliberately overconstructed in such a way that it carries out a very simple task in an extremely complicated way, often in the form of a chain reaction.
This ‘machine’ that will be assembled by means of a contemporary crowd-sourcing method is not in fact a design machine. Instead of actually designing a product, it mainly provides an insight into the design process. The makers, the designer duo HeyHeyHey, are after what they call the 'super moment' and the experience of it, rather than an end result.
However, the machine will leave traces behind, things that are released during the process. And because this is - very 21st Century - a 2.0 version, as well as a pile of analogue cog wheels it contains various digital elements. It makes use of twitter and Facebook, and is being filmed and photographed as if it were a superstar.
Melvin the Machine will be dozing quietly at MU throughout the Dutch Designweek 2010. Operated by two laboratory assistants/professors, the machine will be made ready for use, with the process being restarted over and over again.
