1. WASTE LAND Official Trailer
Filmed over nearly three years, WASTE LAND follows Muniz as he journeys from his home base in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world's largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There he photographs an eclectic band of "catadores" -- self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. Muniz's initial objective was to "paint" the catadores with garbage. However, his collaboration with these inspiring characters as they recreate photographic images of themselves out of garbage reveals both the dignity and despair of the catadores as they begin to re-imagine their lives. Director Lucy Walker (DEVIL'S PLAYGROUND, BLINDSIGHT, COUNTDOWN TO ZERO) has great access to the entire process and, in the end, offers stirring evidence of the transformative power of art and the alchemy of the human spirit.

Well, I just saw it at St. Anthony Main Theater located in Minneapolis, MN. . . and let me just share that I am overwhelmed. What a great documentary! It displayed the truth that a life lived without giving away isn't a life lived at all. Truthfully, we all have the ability to bless those in our lives (or not)! The most compelling about the film was the statement that every single piece of what most of the world would call trash, or garbage, actually goes somewhere when it is tossed. But, how often do we think about, learn, or really get to see the place, the environment, and in this case, the people it reaches, and effects? To see the largest landfill in the world moving with trucks after trucks, and with so many people working there, collecting it, using it, recycling it, and even eating it... My trash could be someone's fortune! Now, I live in the U.S. or A, so how does it home for me? What do I really throw away? What could I reuse? How much food do I actually need? How much food do I actually waste? All of these questions are important, but they are still materialistic, at best. The better question, which the film surrounds magnificently is, Who in my life, or surrounding area, could I bless? Not with my trash, but with my treasures!? Who needs a blessing that hasn't had one for a long time, possibly a lifetime? Do I know anyone who I would consider is poor? Which Organizations are real, trustworthy, honest, committed, and impacting these places and people? A couple good nonprofit resources I've found are:

    1) jumo.com
    2) greatnonprofits.org

Hope you can see it! It's worth it :)
