"sound nature" (2010) (14 min. 47 sec.), an axial performance, created for the occasion of Blago Bung 5, a performance evening at the Emily Harvey Foundation in NYC on October 23, 2010.
The axial percussion soundtrack, recorded live: GQ playing two Roland electronic drums (the Octapad and the SPD-S), the one using nine prearranged drumsets (eight drums each per set), the other with nine sampled words (one per drumpad played asyntactically). The nine words make up the poem ("preverb")--"wise eyes sound nature waking you up inside it"--which constitutes the core of the piece and is presented in animated graphic units in twelve freeze frames throughout the piece (text design by Susan Quasha).
The sync with sound in the present video is an exact reproduction of the spontaneous composition during the performance with no subsequent sound edits. The spoken words are produced by live drumming on the drum-sampler.
The original video, projected in the performance, was recorded 10.10.10 with a hand-held HDV camera (Sony HVR Z1U) at the Barrytown shore near sunset on the Hudson River, and takes an edited sequence of under a minute below the framerate (30 fps) to reveal further configuration.
