This is a second test I did using my Canon HV30, shot all in slow motion. This took an hour to film and 3 hours to edit, find the music and render.

Shot in 60i Tv mode, 1/2000 shutter using "Custom" Image Effect set to -1 Colour Depth and -1 Contrast.

Edited with Sony Vegas Pro 8.

Colour corrected with Magic Bullet Looks and slightly increased contrast and brightness in Sony Vegas Pro 8.

Music Used:

"Daybreak" by Kevin MacLeod at incompetech.com

Note: Outdoors, I ALWAYS set the exposure to -2 so that the auto exposure doesn't "kick in", but indoors I use the photo button trick to lock exposure when it sets to f2.0 and drop it down to the lowest f1.8 possible to avoid that annoying, and stupid gain.

I know this isn't pro, but this is my second time using the camera and I have lots to learn.

Advice would be really appreciated.

Wow. In terms of high quality workflow, this is an exponential improvement.
1/2000 is great for sunny days and slo mo.
    A couple things though...
The highway shot at the end got overexposed. Once you set the cam up for each shot, let the auto exp do its thing, and then adjust down from there to make sure the highlights don't blow out.
Here's the bigun: the slomo is not smooth, which is the benefit of 60i. There is a complicated after effects tutorial on hv20 for how to do it:
    hv20.com/showthread.php?p=47024#post47024
Except use 40%, not his 50%. Also see if you can snag a copy of twixtor pro, to make anything into smooth anything.
Maybe the highway shot was blown out by contrast in post. This is where luma curves really change the game. I lower the contrast a lot in post and then use curves to give the midtones that high contrast feel without blowing out the blacks or whites.
The ones with the sopranos guy on the bike and the basketball were really great. I think the third should be indoor at 1/60 while using the tripod as a steadicam to get smooth moving shots. The moving shots are almost always more enjoyable unless you're going for a particular rare stillness effect. Watch Sweeney Todd with all its sweeping indoor steadicam shots to the swooning music. And if you master curves for color grading, you'll be untouchable.

Yeah that stupid over exposure was actually smog in my city. OMG!!! I knew there was something wrong when I was watching it in Vegas and I just thought that like maybe it was magic bullet screwing up on the small display. Turns out it's smog. And yeah, it is a little over exposed but the smog just ruined it LOL. The highway scene was actually filmed today and I gotta tell you, it was BURNING hot!!!!!!!!!

I will definetely keep in mind of Twixtor next time I need something for slow motion. Tomorrow, I will be going to a different city and to a beautiful park and filming that, and so just in time before school I foind Eugenia's amazing guide to pullingdown 24p and so I am downloading all the needs now, and tomorrow I will fully learn how to pulldown.

Thank you so much for helping me, I really appreciate what you've done.

I kinda feel bad for the stupid smog at the road shot, but it's too late. Oh well..it's my second time ever using the camera.

TMPGenc is a lot easier (maintain format) and will do a lot better job than the free method, if you can get it.

You're right. I just tried Eugenia's guide, I don't know if it worked...everything was laggy and like it doesn't seem like anything was right. I will try your method right now and download the program using utorrent.

Will message you when I get it.

Come to think of it... if you didn't have pulldown for this vid, that is prob what was wrong with the slomo on vimeo.
24p also gives you compatibility with film standards, so you could potentially go big if you had something great.

I've shot on an HV30 before. It's a cool consumer-based camera. I really like how HD is coming up. Or should I say ... coming down (in price).
