PHillip, Thanks for the video, this is the first time I've herd of this feature. I had a quick question for you, I've got the canon 550d / t2i and I've got the 18 - 55 kit lens, and the 50mm f/1.8 cheap prime that canon offers but I am looking to get a really nice lens for video use and was wondering if you could point me in the right direction. I realize that most dslr film makers have a plethora of lenses, but since I'm just starting out, what do you think would be a good single lens solution that I would use a lot even when I can afford more lenses?

    you need Canon EF 18-200mm MarkII f1.2. it's 450$ on bhphoto.com
  • Drew Maw 1 year ago
HAHAH!!! Yeah, really. Why not make it 10-300mm at f1.2 while we're at it! And it covers Canon full frame too.
  • Travis Wears 1 year ago
there are resources everywhere on the web that answer this question. try a google search or searching the blog first.
  • Otis Carlisle 1 year ago
ive been google searching for 2 weeks, I've read stacks of litterature on lenses and everyone seems to have a different opinion, I supposed ill just go close my eyes and hope I pick a good one. thanks for the link fat elvis, and max for listing some lens that doesn't exist, everyone starts somewhere dude.
  • Philip Bloom pro 1 year ago
Best place Otis is simply my lens blog. I give all the info you need! philipbloom.net/2010/08/20/which-lenses-to-buy/

There is no one lens as every one wants something different, but a good start is the Sigma 30mm F1.4 as it's a standard lens and great in low light. Perfect for T2i
  • Craig Whipps 1 year ago
    Otis,
It's not cheap, and it's very heavy. It's more expensive than the T2i with the kit lens (but it's on sale at the moment).

I just got the Canon EFS 17-55mm f/2.8 IS, and I love it. Here's a link to a review:

    the-digital-picture.com/reviews/canon-ef-s-17-55mm-f-2.8-is-usm-lens-review.aspx

And here's one of my favorite examples:

    vimeo.com/8133373

The image quality is identical to my EF 100mm f/2.8 MACRO L IS USM. The sharpness and bokeh is quite stunning. Nearly nonexistent chromatic aberration, and quiet, reliable, and accurate autofocus.

You asked for a single lens solution... it's on my T2i about 90% of the time. It's the Image Quality, the Image Stabilization, and the f/2.8 that did it... I think.

(Sorry, haven't had time to post an example of my own)

    Hope that helps.

Very very interesting but was someone hoovering in the background? I'm not generally a fast pan kinda guy but worth knowing about...

Philip: so your next edits will be in iMovie 11 and not FCP? Saves you a lot of time. Not sure if the AIC is OK in iMovie11. Brings the quality down is my opinion. Yours?

Looks good but honestly the mouvement of the camera is quite simple, this test doesn't mean much... Will make more sence to try it on a more complex camera mouvement, something we really have to face in filmaking...
  • Philip Bloom pro 1 year ago
just a simple test with footage that i have, feel free to try more complex stuff as I am sure we want to see what it is capable off...

Wow, thanks for this Philip! I wonder what this filter would do with a shaky handheld shot.
  • Jesse Brauning plus 1 year ago
In my experience, these filters only fix the side to side bending. Vertical squishing is left alone, and so handheld footage or bumpy footage from a car or something similar is unaffected.

Good comparison video. Hopefully FCP8 (if that product ever ships, like, this century) will have that feature, too.

phil thanks for sharing this video, my habit is to use the fcp, I always saw it lacked details to imovie, in this case is different, I hope soon the fcp have functions like that to control the Roling Shutter.
imovie is perfect for home videos or amateur videographers

hopefully apple will put this into FCP during the next update which should be release with lion(hopefully anyways)

1 good feature, but the latest iMovie versions still suck hard. The best version was iMovie HD, really a good program for simple filmmaking. But the current versions are crap.

Great fix! Thanks, have footage for my zombie film that has lots of rolling shutter due to fast pans. I was concerned about it before now thanks to this clip and imovie I can rest easy that my footage is salvageable!
  •
  • Ruben Silberling 1 year ago
yep, i don´t like the cropping, too.
But it seems to be a very easy, fast and CHEAP method to rescue some our clips!
    Thanks for this, Philip!

    Thanks for this intro Phil.
  •
  • now what about if you are using 1080 footage from the 7d, in say h264, would imovie change the compression? Or would it keep it at what format it was in in final cut pro. Because it seems like this would be a good fix for certain clips, although you would not want it to affect the overall quality?

Hopefully Apple will soon realize that people over in the FCP world would really appreciate this feature. Maybe even FCS 4 could incorporate it?

    it will, trust me

Philip...slowly catching up on all your videos as they really are great and you are doing all film makers such a good service. I wondered though what capture software you used to record your screen. I've used SNAPZ PRO in the past, but it never seems good enough quality.
    Many thanks

    Thanks for posting this Philip.
That makes the $100 upgrade more than valuable for most of us.
I heard of another program for well over $500 that also does that. I can now save the $400 and get this upgrade.

    Cheers,

    Rob

    Bingo. Thanks, again :)

  • Hazy Studio 1 year ago
i just did this on some footage i took on a highway in St. Louis Missouri and the St. Louis arch just like twitches its weird and doesn't look good. rolling shutter isn't that bad as long as your not watching in slow motion its hard to notice but us video people get bothered by that kind of stuff :) hahaa
  •
  • Hazy Studio 1 year ago
also when will you ever make a camera movement that dramatic haha
  • Aria Khosravi plus 1 year ago
I hear a lot of people say that, since in cinema it's rare but... If you've ever looked at the work of a TALENTED hip-hop video director, for example, you would understand why we need global shutters lol. The camera HAS to stay moving virtually all of the time, or else it gets really... unengaging, I guess. Not to mention that high shutters are often used to give the video that polished, crisp look, making the skew much more noticeable. But you're right. For narrative work, skew won't be much of a problem (if at all).
  •
  • Aria Khosravi plus 1 year ago
Oh wow. It's been so long that I've shot with anything other than CMOS that I'm thinking that the corrected footage is the one that looks strange :p

Wasn't iMove the 1st to be able to use HDV natively, or some other file format/codec?
Great for iMovie users. Not so good for us FCP users - Apple treats us like begging dogs! lol

You mentioned you were starting to use Premiere CS5. I understand The Foundry has a plug in called Rolling Shutter. Have you tried that out? I, unfortunately don't own a Mac, it is on my wish list though, and edit on PC. Been looking into this plug in.
  • VISACE 1 year ago
The plug in proDAD Mercalli V2 is also available to fix the rolling shutter problem on a PC. And there is even a free solution to reduce rolling shutter on a PC using VirtualDub and the Deshaker plug in.

Anyone knowing some other solutions/plug ins?

It would be really interessting seeing one big comparison of all the rolling shutter reducing solutions out there - i.e. RollingShutter, Lock & Load, Mercalli, the iMovie fix, the VirtualDub fix, ...

How do you export from imovie into a nice format for FCP???
    Thanks

I wonder if they will do anything like this for Premiere or After Effects. Would be soooooo usefull.
  •
  • Matt Chandler plus 7 months ago
great/useful that this is within imovie - and comparable results to a more controllable solution such as 'Rolling shutter' from the foundry - though even this plugin isnt a magic fixer for crossing objects and heavy distortions.
