Here's a quick tutorial showing the workflow to use SynthEyes to 2D track a shot and import that 2D tracker into After Effects.

    Hi Josh, thanks for the tutorial. I have a question, which is the advantage of the Syntheyes 2D tracking system versus the AE 2d Tracking system? The pre-roll and key smooth options?

    Hi A3, your welcome. The SynthEyes 2D tracking system is much more robust and accurate than the built in AE pixel point tracker. Pre-roll and key smooth are certainly some of the resons why it's better. Mostly, it comes down to the SynthEyes 2D tracker is faster, more accurate and it has a lot more options. Especially the 2D tracker in SynthEyes 2011 :).

    Great advice, thank you, Josh...
    Would you happen to know how to use Syntheyes for MoCap? I can only find facial capture on their website, but I am interested in using moCap to control meshes, like fbx-files that create a skeleton ect..

    Your welcome and thanks for the comment Peter. I haven't used it for MoCap yet only object tracking but I plan to do some MoCap tests in the future. Once I do I will make some tutorials covering it.

    Josh, do you have any experience with The Foundry's CameraTracker plugin for 3D? It seems that this would be the best solution out there for doing 3D tracking. Plus, it's quite affordable, at $250 for a node-locked 64bit version. If you have any experience with it, I'd love to hear what it is. Have you already seen this example of 3D tracking using CameraTracker?

    Hi Shalom, yes I was a beta tester for it. Check out this post on my site vfxdaily.com/?p=105 .

    It's great if your just an AE user but if you plan to use a 3D program you're better off with SynthEyes or something comparable.
