INFLUENCERS is a short documentary that explores what it means to be an influencer and how trends and creativity become contagious today in music, fashion and entertainment.

The film attempts to understand the essence of influence, what makes a person influential without taking a statistical or metric approach.

Written and Directed by Paul Rojanathara and Davis Johnson, the film is a Polaroid snapshot of New York influential creatives (advertising, design, fashion and entertainment) who are shaping today's pop culture.

"Influencers" belongs to the new generation of short films, webdocs, which combine the documentary style and the online experience.

Great work. I agree that it did feel that the focus is very consumer-oriented. Influencers are outside of the commercial realm too. You featured some, like Gandhi.

So some focus on social influence eg. philanthropy, social entrepeneurship, charity, politics etc. would be good subject matter for a future doco perhaps.

Loved that last song! What is it?

Please be my mentor and tell us how you recorded all interviews. Like Is it recorded from a sort of script-like thing, or did you let them just improvising and then made the script for editing? How to get people to talk about the same thing?

I find it amusing these people in New York City feel that they are influential over the entire world. How egotistical! Do they think that people in places like Duluth, Minnesota or Chiang Mai, Thailand care about what they are doing? Every individual place in this world has its own style and its own influencers in that place. Who outside of NYC cares about these people?
  • Brian Williamson 1 year ago
I live in a small town called Somerset, WI, a bedroom community of Minneapolis St. Paul and I don't think they are egotistical at all. They obviously are having influence all over, I care about what they have to say.
  • Andrew Koole 1 year ago
The point of the film is that you should care, not just about NYC, but also about your local "scene." NYC is just an example.

A very interesting film. If you read the fine print "by R+I Creative" you may realize that this is a clever advertisement for the creative agency itself. As a filmmaker I understand that media is the ultimate manipulation tool, and by making a film about what an "Influencer" is you are essentially creating yourself as the authority on how to influence people. According to this film, things that are "cool" are eventually things that spread to the mainstream. Which is how creative agencies make money; by bringing "cool" to the masses.

This film tells me that R+I Creative is one of the smarter creative agencies because they went the extra mile to prove they know what they are talking about by making this film. They in-fact, made an inspiring short film that has effected many of the people with the "cool" ideas. The film appears to come from within the indi-film/art culture itself as opposed to a company wanting to profit off of it.

Now it might sound like I disagree with what R+I Creative has done here. I do not. I enjoyed this short. In another forum, I'd commend and applaud this film. On vimeo, a sight for filmmakers, I think its as important that we understand the true purpose of a film, not just its "point."
To break these things down and understand how they work will help you get jobs. Most filmmakers never get to make a film, they are expensive. Filmmakers historically have relied on corporations to fund their craft. So, while it is important for corporations to understand the influential individuals, it's just as important for filmmakers to understand the companies who profit by helping corporations to understand us.

As a filmmaker, you are an influencer. This is what a corporation wants to harness more than anything: the power to influence someone to purchase their product. However, corporate employees are so out of touch, as stated in this film, that they NEED creative agencies to connect them with influential minds. If they can get the influential minds to tout their brand as "cool" voila, the money rolls right in.

Kudos to R+I Creative. By making this film, they are an "Influencer." Very creative.
  • nice breakdown sir..

i think i hate trends. but i think i also hate the kind to mix trends and creativity like done in this film. the film is about mainstream and unfortunately it is it itself. it seems if would'nt exist some organizations or institutions of research about trends and creativity like universities. all spoken is spoken from trendsetter themself. is this a film or advertisement?
  • V for Vincent plus 2 months ago
good question, the film does seem to gravitate between new york and tokyo and fall towards a certain crowd. the film is a documentary but is it extensive and has it answered all your questions? seems like "no" on both accounts but these are the subjects and cast of influencers that R+I are interested in. you just might not be their audience.

i'd say that this piece does something differently than analyze the artist and designer and the magic of the creative process. they look at the impact and what it is and how it works. i think it's rad for that reason. they take a different approach and it's fresh on a lot of levels.

    cheers

    v.
