This is a really great piece, nice job start to finish. The coloring makes me feel like i am in the shop. What type of lighting were you using for the piece?
  • VITA BREVIS FILMS plus 1 year ago
    Thanks for watching Nathan..
Crazy enough though we didn't do any grade or post process to the footage at all It was just a great location with beautiful available light. Skylar just knew the perfect time of day to capture it at it's best..

    Thanks again

great short! love small docs like this and definitely a dying breed of not only industry but people, their skills, dedication and responsibility. i think my father told me that once...but diminishing returns as we continue further toward year 2100. Nice work with MX and available light.

Popped in here after seeing the link in Reduser. Great little doc, love it. The best docs seem to me to be all about character. Can you tell us the lens choice?
  • VITA BREVIS FILMS plus 1 year ago
Thanks Jonathon.. The lenses were a set of Zeiss super speeds.. and mostly the RPZ 17-50..

Oh my. Something that seems so mundane—
you brought it alive by reminding us that it is a person doing this work. It invokes sentiment of loneliness, uncertainty of the future, pride, and that which can pertain to a human life that is often over-looked. THANK YOU for sharing.

A heart warming film, what a courageous and hard working man. I love the way the images flow so smoothly whilst Neil talks about his work, experiences, and the next generation. I remember my father after watching this, a great man who realises the uncertain future but sticks to doing his duty nevertheless. What ever the outcome, you can't lose this way :) Added to my top30 vimeo.com/channels/tfa30 :)

From a production standpoint, this was gorgeous. There was so much attention to every detail, including the coloring and not many even think about the effort to properly color video these days.

From a humanity standpoint, very powerful and straight to the heart. It makes you want to take a trip to meet this gentleman, and that is what proper storytelling is all about.

I hope these types of works are just the beginning, because you are very, very good at them. This is what our art is all about.
  • VITA BREVIS FILMS plus 1 year ago
    Jason,
Thanks for all your kind words!
Interestingly enough, the director Skylar and I had looked at the footage and decided that the footage was perfect as shot. No post processing or grade was done at all!! We just had great light and a great location!!
I Think we will do more of these soon.. It's just finding other great subjects now..

    Thanks again Jason

I can simpithise with this gentleman and his point of view. I have looked for the past five years for a younger person to teach my trade (yacht joinery) but it seems it is rare at best when you find one. This trade will always provide a reasonable income and give you personal satisfaction at the end of the day because you can actually touch your work. Truely a great video in all respects. Machines cann't do everything and when they can they won't need us.

Well done. I liked the use of the slider.
  • VITA BREVIS FILMS plus 1 year ago
Thanks for the comment! What's a slider?
  • Justin Mansfield 1 year ago
A slider, meaning something that facilitates camera movement. For example, the shot from :48-:50 or 2:07-2:10. What camera did you use for this, and how did you record the sound? I didn't notice a lav mic on the subject.
  • VITA BREVIS FILMS plus 1 year ago
This was shot on a RED mx camera.. The dolly shots were done on a Chapman Leonard dolly.

The sound was recorded via boom pole and shotgun mic.

    Thanks.

I just wanted to add that this is so beautiful in its simplicity. The music, the shots, and the crystal clear interview really come together to form the definition of a well told story. Congratulations on a job well done to all of you. The world needs to hear more stories like this.

  • Man I hate that feeling of being manipulated by the soundtrack. Like, "this is how you're supposed to feel right now... OK, now you should feel like this instead"... maybe if it was a little less ham-fisted? As it is, the music totally ruins the piece :(
  • Barb Lawrence 1 year ago
I didn't even notice3 there was music.. I guess because I was interested.
  • That must be a nice luxury--the ability to completely shut off higher level functioning when something strikes your fancy. Maybe that's why I find most Hollywood videos so disappointing? I suppose I shall try harder in the future to be interested.

This guy reminds me of every machining instructor I've ever had.

It's a shame that they've closed almost all the vocational(ie useful) courses around here(Bay Area). I wish there wasn't such a stigma in learning a trade in America.

  •
  • bradbell.tv plus 1 year ago
I love this movie! It will be a constant reference.

It sparked some ideas about how we take the chaos and noise of our surroundings and break it up into meaningful segments. We regard most of the world as noise and disregard about 90% of our world as such. As filmmakers, we reduce and segment events further, until we arrive at what is essential. Filmmaking is essentially about event segmentation. This film made me realise that this concept applied as much to shooting as editing. Thanks. (The 1080p is stunning too. It makes me wonder again what the point of 3D is.)

I am a young metalsmith, and beginning video maker. I was left a little heart broken by this video. You managed to capture, perfectly, the sentiment of working in this industry. Neil describes not just his personal situation, but also and indirectly, the state of our economy and even society. Once you realize how humans make thinks, you can begin to see thier soul.

Thanks for a s great video.
